There’s a lot of new faces around here and I thought it’s about time to reintroduce myself.

Hi 👋 my name is Rena and I am a singing teacher and vocalist based in Sydney 🇦🇺

I’ve been singing for over 10 years, learning from various institutions, music teachers, and gaining various AMEB certifications 🎤

I currently am teaching singing and absolutely loving it!

The most important thing when it comes to singing practice, or even music practice, is quality over quantity.

This is the guide I like to follow and recommend for my students:

• Spend 1/4 of the time on warmups - start with body exercises, followed by breathing, sirens and lip trills, and various scales and vocal exercises
• Spend 1/2 of the time on repertoire - don’t just sing through the songs but slowly refine your phrases, applying the breathing and pitch techniques learnt during the warmup; consider how dynamics and expressive techniques can be used
• Spend 1/4 of the time on technique/theory - this could be an aspect of music theory, some sight singing, aural training, or even focusing on refining breathing technique or pitch accuracy

I am very passionate about helping singers clearly articulate their lyrics.

Being able to understand a singer is a significant component of the story-telling of a song and helping the audience connect with the singer.

During singing lessons, we use various exercises to help with improving articulation.

These include:
• tongue twisters
• vowel exercises to improve tongue placement and mouth shape
• talking the lyrics and more

Now I must admit, this is a topic I struggle with myself and I have to actively straighten my posture to not fall back into old habits.

As a singer, having great posture and elevation in the body is critical to engaging the maximum amount of support and ultimately, it helps us sing better.

In singing lessons, I take time with my students to work on their posture to maximise their support for easy and effective singing.
