🌍🌿 International Day for Biological Diversity - today - shines a spotlight on action 🌿🌍
Today, on the International Day for Biological Diversity, we celebrate the incredible variety of life on Earth and reflect on our role in preserving it. This year’s theme, "Be part of the Plan," is a powerful call to action for everyone to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by supporting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also known as The Biodiversity Plan.
At GreenCollar, we are dedicated to taking action by partnering with landholders on environmental projects - in carbon, water, plastics and nature - and committed to applying science to measure and validate real outcomes that afford a value to critical environmental services. Our biodiversity initiative, NaturePlus™, is a world-leading biodiversity credit scheme that uses a scientifically robust environmental accounting framework to inform and incentivise evidence-based decision-making, ensuring positive impacts for nature.
NaturePlus™ generates certified outcomes in the condition of native ecosystems, which are valued and rewarded with transferrable NaturePlus™ Credits. Our aim is to achieve and maintain a net gain in the condition of native ecosystems globally. We enable scalable voluntary investment in projects that demonstrate real, measurable, and verifiable biodiversity outcomes.

At GreenCollar, we can't stop 'raven' about birds!
Last month, our Field Monitoring Co-ordinator and long-time twitcher Silas Darrell participated in the NSW Twitchathon, attempting to spot as many bird species over a 30hr period as possible to raise money to research the critically endangered Australian Painted Snipe. His team, The “Dunbogan Drongos” managed to identify 219 species, travelling over around 2000kms between Mount Hope in Western NSW, travelling back towards the coast, through Port Macquarie hinterland and to the shores of the Farquhar Inlet. What an effort!
Thanks Silas, Peter and Warren for these pics of a Sacred Kingfisher, Black Necked Stork, Rainbow Bee-eater and White breasted Woodswallow, and flock of budgies.
Plus - Check out these stunning photos from our field team member Gabe - a Mulga Parrot, Spiny-cheeked honeyeater and of course, Australia's tallest native bird, the Emu.
We're hiring!

Last week we shared the details of NaturePlus™ - a new biodiversity credit scheme designed to drive voluntary investment into projects that deliver measured and verified outcomes for nature. NaturePlus™ has taken over three years of development, testing and validation, much of which has been overseen by Anjali Nelson, our General Manager for New Initiatives. In this episode of the Good Futures podcast, Anjali talks to John Treadgold about the development of the scheme and how it fits into a new range of business models that are geared towards restoring and conserving biodiversity.
#94: Anjali Nelson: GreenCollar driving natural-capital innovation with Nature Plus biodiversity credits - John Treadgold A conversation with Anjali Nelson, General Manager of Operations at GreenCollar, about developing nature-based solutions to combat both climate change and biodiversity loss.
Just under a year ago, we launched NaturePlus™ - a new biodiversity credit scheme designed to drive voluntary investment into projects that deliver measured and verified outcomes for nature. Today, we are proud to announce the issuance of our first NaturePlus™ Credits from one of 20 pilot projects running in Australia.
NaturePlus™ Credits each represent one hectare of habitat or species restoration or conservation.
Our aim with NaturePlus™ is to help achieve and maintain a net gain in the condition of native ecosystems globally. We are incredibly proud to be able to present and share this solution that values and incentivises measurable outcomes for nature across native fauna and vegetation, soil, fresh water, costal and marine environments both here in Australia and overseas.
Home - NaturePlus™ A number of Australian and International projects are undergoing feasibility scoping. To be eligible for validation as a NaturePlus™ Project, projects must first be registered and certified under the Accounting for Nature® Framework.
To celebrate the issuance of our first NaturePlus™ Credits, GreenCollar has sponsored a special four-part series of the Good Future podcast exploring the role of markets in addressing the biodiversity crisis. In this episode, fund manager and farmer, Nigel Tiverton shares his experience of developing agriculture projects with the regeneration of biodiversity at their core and discusses 'the business of biodiversity'.

A new Reef Credit Method, developed by Verterra Ecological Engineering in partnership with GreenCollar and AgriProve, is now open for consultation through Eco-Markets Australia. Once finalised, the Grazing Land Management Method will open the opportunity for graziers across the Great Barrier Reef Catchments to generate Reef Credits through improved grazing practices to create a new and diversified income stream.
The new Method tracks how changes in land management reduce the flow of sediment into waterways, supporting graziers to achieve higher levels of ground cover before high intensity rainfall periods. It will see land managers rewarded with one Reef Credit for every 538kgs of sediment prevented from flowing onto the Reef.
Reef Credits is a voluntary environmental market that has had strong investment from both the public and private sector. Find out more about the proposed Method and the opportunity to get involved here.

UN scientific advisors have today acknowledged the enormous amount of work that has been done to help protect the Great Barrier Reef, but have also stressed that it remains under 'serious threat'. Accelerating water quality improvements remains a key focus with the UN stating a 'drastic shift' is required to reach targets for fine sediment and dissolved inorganic nitrogen. The Reef Credit market was designed in collaboration with landholders, researchers and Queensland Government to tackle these two issues by working with farmers and graziers to deliver measurable and verifiable reductions in sediment and nitrogen flowing onto the Reef.

When it comes to criticism of voluntary carbon projects, we should be listening more to indigenous peoples and local communities and the impact of these criticisms on them, argues Beto Borges, Director of Forest Trends Association Communities and Secretariat of the Peoples Forests Partnership. People's Forest Partnership is an indigenous-led organisation that GreenCollar is proud to participate in. Read the opinion piece here:
“Carbon cowboy” pieces get clicks, but at the risk of ignoring what indigenous communities are actually saying - Ecosystem Marketplace The climate finance space is at risk. Confronted with an onslaught of agenda-driven media coverage aiming to discredit one of the largest sources of funding available for forest protection, mechanisms like REDD+ and voluntary carbon markets could be unfairly discredited to the point of losing moment...

The relationships we have with our project partners are incredibly important to us. Whether it's the initial consultations with one of our Business Development Managers to assess project potential, regular chats with our Project Partnerships team to make sure things are on track, or interactions with our field team during their visits to survey and monitor projects. Every step of the way, we love that our relationships more often than not, turn from business relationships, into friendships. And, we're pleased to say, the feeling is often reciprocated. Here's what one of our project partners had to say about our team recently.
"I just wanted to say a really sincere thank you for the great field crew you guys have. The last few days we have had Ezra & Sjoerd staying with us for monitoring, and they were just such a pleasure to have here. Both as bright as buttons and great positive energy! Like always, your team is so courteous, friendly and very switched on. The calibre of your people in the field is really amazing....Learning from your team is something we enjoy and we always hope we can be of value in return by imparting some of our knowledge too. It is clear to us how passionate they are about the environment and the work they do. We never take for granted how lucky we are to have found GreenCollar and to be working with such a lovely group of people. It really feels like GreenCollar is just part of our business, like an extension of our business, because the project and your people share similar vision and values to us, and it has integrated so easily into how we roll. A really genuine partnership 🤗."
We're feeling incredibly chuffed to have received this glowing feedback from valued partners Nadia and Rob at Goondicum Station, and very proud of Ezra and Sjoerd - you guys rock.
We often share what a day in the life of our field team is like... but what about their nights?
Camping in wide open spaces and doing some late-night star gazing from the comfort of your swag doesn't officially appear on our job ads, but it's definitely one of the perks of the job 😍.
