CALL FOR AGENDA ITEMS - UNSW Law Student Rep Meeting with Faculty (9 February 2022)
Dear UNSW Law Student Community,
Happy New Year and we hope you have all been able to have a safe and enjoyable summer break!
The Reps will be making a more formal ‘Start of Term’ statement at the beginning of Week 1 to welcome our new students to UNSW Law and to outline our goals for the year.
However, we want to make returning students aware that the Reps will be having a meeting with the faculty this Wednesday 9 February 2022. This meeting will provide a fantastic opportunity for the Reps to ask questions on behalf of students about how T1 will operate and allow us to raise any concerns students may have.
We understand that Moodle pages should be released to students on Monday and this will allow everyone to have a better understanding of what their term will look like. We want to provide everyone with as much time as possible to review their Moodle pages and take the time to send through any questions or concerns they may have to the Reps prior to our meeting. As a result, we will be accepting any agenda items that you would like us to raise at the meeting until 6:00pm on Tuesday.
You can send through an agenda item via one of the communication channels listed on our page. Please remember that all matters raised with the faculty are done so anonymously. All personal matters should be raised with your Course Convenor or Lecturer.
We look forward to 2022 hopefully being a year with minimal disruption and hopefully a return to the normal university lifestyle we know and love. The Reps cannot wait to be back on campus and to start chatting with students face to face again soon.
Enjoy O Week/the last week of the holidays!
Kind regards,
UNSW Law Student Reps.
CALL FOR AGENDA ITEMS AND UPDATE REGARDING ENROLMENT APPOINTMENTS:
Dear UNSW Law & Justice student community,
We hope you are all well and have had a great start to Term 3!
Next Wednesday, the Reps will be having one of their regular meetings with Faculty. If you have any issues which you would like to have addressed at the meeting, please feel free to send a message to one of the Reps. We raise all issues with Faculty anonymously and as always, we will provide a summary after the meeting of the matters discussed.
Additionally, during our meeting with Faculty over the holidays regarding elective enrolment issues, we also raised our concerns that some students were receiving later enrolment appointments compared to the rest of their cohort which contributed to these students having fewer enrolment options compared to their peers once they were able to enrol.
Faculty came back to us and informed us that enrolment appointments are issued based on the number of units of credit (UOC’s) students have completed but noticed that Internal Program Transfer (IPT) students were accidentally receiving later appointments due to their pre-transfer UOC’s no longer being recognised. Faculty informed us today that they have gone through the list of current IPT transfer students and ensured that these students (who have the same projected law progression as the rest of their peers) now have the same enrolment appointment time as the rest of their cohort. If this is not the case, Faculty have asked impacted students to call Student Services to ensure they are given the correct time.
If you are having any issues with Student Services regarding this matter, please inform one of the reps. We will be able to assist you in getting the issue rectified.
Despite Uni being online for the remainder of the term, the incoming end of lockdown suggests a return to everyone being back together on campus again is not too far away!! We look forward to seeing you all again soon, but in the meantime, we hope you all stay safe and have a great term!
Kind regards,
UNSW Law Student Representatives
SUMMARY OF ELECTIVE ENROLMENT ISSUES MEETING WITH FACULTY:
Good evening everyone,
Please see attached our detailed summary of the matters discussed at the Rep’s meeting with Faculty today regarding the current elective enrolment situation.
The summary contains information about what has caused the problem, what is being done to rectify the issues, as well as information about course registration dates and the myUNSW waitlist function (these last two items have relevance for students in ALL years - not just those doing electives).
We sincerely apologise for the length of the summary, but this is quite a complex situation and we wanted to provide you with as much information and detail as possible.
The Reps understand that some students may be rightfully disappointed with the outcome but we are going to continue working hard to ensure as many students as possible gain access to an elective course in T3 2021. Our discussions with Faculty do not end after this meeting. We will continue updating the Faculty about your circumstances and pressing for more places to be opened in elective courses so please keep us informed about your circumstances.
Thank you for your patience whilst we have obtained this information. Apologies once again for the length of the summary.
Please feel free to contact us or make a comment on this post if you have any questions about any of the information that we have provided.

We are meeting with Faculty on Wednesday to discuss the concerns raised in the responses and we will provide an update about the matters discussed on Wednesday evening.
We understand students may be a bit stressed about the current circumstances but we hope to be able to resolve this situation as soon as possible!

Thank you to all of the students who have provided details about their current issues with T3 Elective Enrolment. We have currently had 14 responses so far and would love to get this number to at least 30 in order for the data we obtain from the form to be completely representative of the current struggles students are having and for the form to provide us with an insight into how many students are effected by the current problems.
We totally appreciate that filling out a google form is the absolute last item on anyones holiday bucket list but your responses will be appreciated and will greatly assist us in sorting out the issues with the Faculty at our meeting early next week.
If you are keen to share the issues you are currently facing with enrolling into electives for T3, please see the link below to access the google form.

CALL FOR AGENDA ITEMS - Student Rep Meeting with Faculty Wednesday 25 August 2021
Dear UNSW Law and Justice Students,
We hope that you are all safe and well despite the extremely difficult circumstances we face!
This Wednesday the Reps will be meeting with Faculty for one of our regular meetings. We are looking for any issues which you would like for us to raise anonymously during this meeting. If you have any suggested agenda items, please feel free to send a message to one of the Reps via the communication channels listed on our page.
Given it is now official that we will be learning online until at least the end of Week 6 this meeting provides an invaluable opportunity for the Reps to represent Students desires for online learning for this upcoming term to the Faculty. We want to hear from you about any aspects of online learning that you want changed so we can represent these concerns at the earliest possible opportunity.
During this meeting we will be asking for clarity on the expected structure of online classes so we can pass this information on to you.
We also be seeking an update on the current state of database access and will be sure to pass this information on.
Congratulations for getting through the end of an unprecedented term and exams! We hope you are all able to take a well deserved break despite the restrictions!
Regards,
UNSW Law Student Reps
CALL FOR AGENDA ITEMS - LAW REP MEETING WITH FACULTY ON WEDNESDAY 28 JULY 2021
Good evening everyone,
We hope you are all doing well during this difficult period. The Reps will be meeting with Faculty on Wednesday for one of our regular meetings. If you have any matters which you would like us to raise anonymously please feel free to pass them on to one of the Reps, we would love to hear from you!
The Reps would like to thank everyone who has contacted us regarding their concerns over the new online class enrolment priority system. In addition to other matters, we will be talking with Faculty on Wednesday about the exceptions and seeing whether they can be expanded to include more spots for students who do not fit into an exception category, but who are concerned about returning to campus (if we do return to campus in T3) and whether more online classes will be created if demand remains high.
As always, we will provide you with a summary of the matters we discuss and the outcome of those discussions.
All the best for the final few weeks of term and please remember we are here for you if you need anything!
Kind regards,
UNSW Law Student Reps.
T3 ENROLMENT AND ONLINE CLASSES:
Following the announcement made yesterday by the Faculty regarding the enrolment process for online classes in T3 2021, the Reps made further inquiries to clarify how this process would affect onshore students who for a variety of legitimate reasons also want to study online next term.
The Faculty wanted to make it clear that onshore students are not locked out from online classes if they have a legitimate reason to study online and that there is a process in place for onshore students to apply for an online learning spot.
The new Full Class Requests Policy for online classes outlines numerous cases in which access to an online spot will be granted for students, with some cases prioritised over others. We encourage all students to read this document in full (see link below) along with the email that was sent to students yesterday about the new arrangements.
If there are students who wish to study online but do not fit into one of these categories and believe that they should have access to an online class we recommend that students still join the waitlist for that online class and submit a full class enrolment request to see if they can gain access.
Faculty also said to us that they will monitor the demand for online classes via the waitlist function and will make any timetable adjustments as they see fit if there is an obvious strong demand for online classes.
Of course, if restrictions continue to impact on the ability for face to face classes to be delivered next term then alternative arrangements will be put in place for all students.
Please feel free to contact the Reps if you have any questions or concerns about the online learning enrolment arrangements for next term.
Stay safe!
COVID-19 UPDATE AND HANDOVER TO 2021-2022 LAW REPS
Dear UNSW Law Student Community,
We hope you are all safe, well and domestic students are coping ok with lockdown. The Reps know that the return to online learning may be a challenging period for some students. We want to let you know that we are here for you and that we are also in constant communication with the Faculty regarding the current learning arrangements.
If you have any concerns or suggestions about the online learning formats which have been reintroduced for the rest of Term 2 we would love to hear from you so we can take your feedback anonymously to the Faculty and make any necessary changes as soon as possible.
We know that the first week back of a longer-term change to online learning is extremely disruptive for both staff and students. Whilst we accept that the transition may not be seamless we want to make sure that all students' needs are catered for as quickly as possible.
We also want to highlight that 24/7 mental health support is available for UNSW students who may be finding this period difficult. Please never feel afraid to seek help and support when you need it! These services are here for you!
https://student.unsw.edu.au/counselling
Additionally, we want to inform you that the 2021-2022 Reps have now taken over from the amazing 2020-2021 Reps. The incoming reps would like to say a massive thank you to Isaac Dela Torre, Laura Boshier-Eggins, Tony Wu, Abida Aura and Angela Kintominas for all of their hard work over the past 18 months. Their tireless assistance and advocacy for students during an unprecedented pandemic and academic calendar was nothing short of extraordinary. The incoming reps certainly have big shoes to fill and we wish the outgoing reps all the best with their future studies and also congratulate Abida and Laura on graduating!
Following elections held last term, Gopika Aryad will become the new JD representative. Tristan Harley is the new Higher Degrees and Research representative (covering LLM, BCCL and PhD students). Alexander Humphreys continues as the UG representative for another elected term. It is expected that more students will be appointed as student representatives to fill out the various Faculty Committee positions in the coming months. The 2021-22 Reps will remain the representatives for the next 18 months (until December 2022).
The contacts list at the top of the Reps page has been edited so if you ever need to contact any of the new reps directly you will now find all of their details there.
Lastly, we want to keep spreading positive vibes to everyone! We have been through this before and we can get through it again! Keep looking out for each other and we cannot wait to get back to campus as quickly as possible!!
Kind regards,
UNSW Law Student Representatives.

COVID-19 Update 23-6-21
Dear UNSW Law and Justice Student Community,
As the COVID-19 situation evolves in NSW we understand that this is a very unsettling and uncertain time for the student community. If you are feeling anxious about the current covid situation we want you to know that you are not alone and the Reps are here for you to answer your questions, provide advice or even just have a chat.
Late this afternoon, UNSW sent out an email to your student emails outlining how the new restrictions imposed by the NSW Government impact campus activities. We strongly encourage all students to please read this email.
Earlier today we sent an email to the Faculty to let them know that we had received numerous concerns from students about attending F2F classes in the current COVID conditions and inquired if any arrangements would be put in place for students who do not feel comfortable attending classes in person. Faculty confirmed that they were aware of these very understandable concerns and were awaiting advice from Central UNSW Governance before providing any Faculty specific advice to students.
Now that the advice from Central has come through we are expecting more information from the Faculty to come through shortly. It appears that communications are being made to individual courses via moodle. The reps are communicating closely with the Faculty and will also seek to obtain more information. Please make sure you keep a close eye on your UNSW emails for updates from either Lecturers or Faculty Staff as well as the Law Reps page.
Finally, despite the current COVID-19 situation obviously being far less than ideal it is important to remember that we have gotten through this situation before and there is no doubt that we will get through it again! Please look out for each other during this period and stay safe!
Kind regards,
UNSW Law Student Representatives.
UPDATE REGARDING LEGAL DATABASE ACCESS FOR STUDENTS:
Dear UNSW Law and Justice Student Community,
We hope you are all well!
Over the past few weeks we have been working hard and engaging closely with Faculty to try and receive some more information regarding the current situation with the changed student access rights to certain legal databases. We have specifically sought more information on the decision making processes which lead to the changes, the extent of the changes and any information on the future plans being adopted for student access to legal databases. We have specifically requested information on these matters with respect to student access to HeinOnline and Halsbury's Laws of Australia (via Lexis).
Both the Faculty and the UNSW Library team have been very transparent with the information they have provided us. Linked is a document addressing all of the questions outlined in the first paragraph utilising the information provided to us by Faculty and the UNSW Library Team.
Both the Faculty and UNSW Library have been actively listening to our feedback and are keen for us to continue sharing student perspectives on database access matters, especially as the Library team start planning their 2022 database delivery strategy. The Reps are very keen to hear your feedback so we can continue to represent your concerns and enable students to have a say about database access in the future. If you have any feedback you would like to share with the Reps, please feel free to contact us via the communication channels listed on our page.
We hope you find this document useful and you are enjoying term 2 (Reading week is nearly here.....)!

UNSW LAW AND JUSTICE STUDENT SURVEY
Dear UNSW Law and Justice Student Community,
We trust you have all had a good break so far and you are enjoying the final few days left of the holidays before T2 starts next week!
You may have seen an email today which was sent to you by the Faculty asking you to fill out a student experience survey. To provide more context to this survey, the Faculty is currently undergoing a strategic review of its teaching and assessment strategy with a focus on 2023 and beyond but with recommendations likely to be implemented before then. As part of this review they are really keen to hear students' perspectives especially regarding which teaching and assessment strategies they find the most useful.
We know students are often asked to complete a lot of surveys, but if there is any survey worth completing it is this one! The Faculty will be relying heavily on the data from this survey when creating their new teaching and assessment strategic plan hence it is crucial that as many students as possible from all degree programs and years fill out this survey to ensure students views are genuinely accounted for. If more students complete the survey, the information will be more representative of the student bodies views and the Faculty will treat the results with greater significance in their decision making. This is your best chance to have a say about the future of your Law School!
The Student Reps helped to create this survey and will be submitting a report to Faculty summarising the results. They are also a part of the discussions for the strategic plan and will ensure student views from the survey are properly accounted for.
You can complete the survey by accessing it through your UNSW email. The survey is open to students in all degree programs (LLB, LLM and JD) and students in all years. It is anonymous and you do not need to answer all of the questions if you do not want to. If you are pressed for time, simply answering the multiple choice questions will still be of significant value for the Student Reps and Faculty!
The survey closes at 11:59 on Monday 31 May 2021 (Day 1 of Term)!
