We know violence against women is at epidemic levels. Yet there has been no comprehensive timely way to count how many women are murdered by perpetrators of domestic violence. Dead Women Australia have been the ones doing this heavy and heartbreaking work. The federal government has finally announced they will now start counting, saying the new "statistical dashboard" will provide quarterly updates on intimate partner homicides to enable police, governments, and policy makers to have access to "accurate, verified and closer to real-time data". This is both a much needed development and a disappointing reflection of Government priorities that it has taken this long to care enough to count.
53 women have been murdered in acts of domestic violence this year. 53 women who were our mothers, our sisters, our friends.
Join us in uniting for the 16 days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (25 November - 10 December). This year’s theme - ‘UNiTE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls’ - calls on everyone to take action to create a world free from violence towards women. There's for violence against women and girls.
