At Mentoring Men, our volunteer mentors are the heart and soul of our community. They offer their time, wisdom, and friendship to support men facing mental health challenges. And regularly get together in peer-support groups to share their experiences and reflect on the benefits they receive in the process of helping others.
Here's a beautiful reflection from one of our dedicated mentors Chuck Anderson at a recent meet-up in Sydneyβs Northern Suburbs:
π£οΈ "I have really enjoyed our great discussions in sharing insights, experiences, and perspectives. It always gives me something to reflect on."
The impact our mentors have is profound, making connections that foster growth, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging for men who really need it.

π It's Friday! AND It's International Yoga Day! π
Did you know yoga can significantly benefit men's mental health? Here are the top 3 benefits:
Stress Relief: Yoga helps to reduce stress levels by promoting relaxation and mindfulness. It's a great way to unwind after a busy day and clear your mind.
Improved Mood: Regular yoga practice increases the production of endorphins, the body's natural mood lifters. This can help combat anxiety and depression, leading to a more positive outlook on life.
Better Sleep: Yoga encourages better sleep patterns by calming the mind and reducing the effects of insomnia. A good night's sleep is crucial for overall mental well-being.
Join us today and discover how yoga can make a difference in your life! πͺπ§ββοΈ

π Even the toughest need support π
In this emotional video of rugby league legend Johnathan Thurston, he speaks about the tragic loss of his former coach, Paul Green, in 2022.
Thurston reminds us that no matter how tough we think we have to be, bottling up our pain and anxiety is harmful to our mental health. And can lead to serious mental health issues down the line. It's essential to acknowledge our struggles and seek help.
Talking to a mentor can be a great step in preventing this. At Mentoring Men, we provide a safe one-to-one long-term space for men to share their feelings and find the support they need.
Reach out today and take the first step towards better mental health. π¬πͺ

A heartfelt thank you to the Reschs Appreciation Society for your incredible generosity at Edmund Resch Day! We're so grateful for the $2927.77 raised for Mentoring Men. Your support means the world to us and will make a real difference for men facing life's challenges.
If you haven't had a chance to donate yet, just go to: https://eofy-mm-2024.raiselysite.com/
And remember your donation is tax-deductible!.
Thank you again for your kindness and generosity!
Over the years, one of the things that has made this group different has been our generosity for those causes that we care about. That theme continued at Edmund Resch Day last weekend with $1,777.77 raised for Mentoring Men, a registered Australian charity which provides support to men that are navigating changes or challenges in their life. $777.77 was donated by Danny Webb for the membership tag #11,111 and Member #2 pledged an additional $1,000 of RAS funds from recent merchandise sales. Both members #2 and #11,111 have already made good on their pledges.
We have now raised $53,273 to various charities. $28,000 to Movember, over $6,000 to My Men's Team, $6,666 for Mentoring Men, over $4,000 for Beyond Blue, $3,707 for Legacy Australia, $2,000 to the NSW Rural Fire Service, $1,450 for Dementia Australia, and $1,450 for NSW Health (Illawarra Shoalhaven District). Not bad for a little Facebook beer appreciation society started at 2am after a bender many many years ago...
On Sunday, the Chairman of Mentoring Men actually came along and shared a few words. I know that many of our members were inspired to donate personally to this cause, but may not have gotten around to it yet. If you'd like to donate (and receive a tax deductible receipt before EOFY), please do so via the following website: https://mentoringmen.org.au/donate/
I think it's fair to say that we are all doing it tough with cost of living at the moment, but if anything the need for Mentoring Men services in our community is only increasing given the financial stress everyone is under. So if you can give generously it would be greatly appreciated.
Have you ever felt surrounded by people but still incredibly alone? You're not alone in this feeling.
Loneliness is a silent epidemic affecting many men. In fact, 1 in 4 say they have no good mates. This sense of isolation can have a profound impact on mental health.
π The Facts:
Men who are not lonely have significantly better mental health.
They experience lower rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidality.
At Mentoring Men, we understand the importance of connection. Our volunteer mentors are here to support and listen, providing a life support to those who feel isolated.
This International Men's Health Week let's break the stigma and start the conversation.
Reach out, connect, and support one another. Together, we can create a world where no man has to walk alone.
It's Men's Health Week 2024!
And we're asking why some men find it easier discussing their personal challenges with strangers rather than with their friends and family? ππ€π¬
A conversation with a stranger sheds some light on the subject. πΆββοΈπ€β¨
Have you or someone you know experienced this? We're diving deep to understand the underlying causes. Share your insight and stories with us!
Huge congratulations to Ian Westmoreland on receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his incredible work in menβs health and youth support! π
Ian, your dedication is truly inspiring. Since 2015, youβve been a guiding light as a volunteer mentor for the Raise Foundation, and you continue to make a difference at Kidshope and COACH mentoring programs. Founding Mentoring Men in 2018 has provided a much-needed platform for menβs mental health, and your Kintsugi Heroes Series, started in 2022, is another testament to your commitment to uplifting and inspiring others.
Your OAM is a well-deserved recognition of the positive impact youβve made on so many lives. Weβre incredibly proud of you, Ian! Congrats on this fantastic honor! ποΈπ
This International Men's Health Week remember mental health is not a destination, but a process.
It's about how you drive on the journey, not where you're going. π
Take care of your mental health by having someone to talk to when you need it.

Well as my dad would say βIβll be blowedβ β I have been awarded an Order of Australia!!
I struggle a bit with public recognition but there are a few important things I would like to say:
- First I want to heartfully thank my wife of 41 years Helen who has put up with me and supported me while I pursue what I feel I have been called to do for the past 10 years. Also the support from my amazing family.
- There is a mostly unknown group of people who have been going in to bat for me to receive this honour over the past 12 months while I had no idea any of this was happening. To whoever you are a sincere thank you.
- The incredible teams of volunteers and supporters who have given so much of their time, talents and passion to support Mentoring Men and Kintsugi Heroes.
Finally those who know my story would have heard me share that my life direction changed significantly on 10 Set 2013 leading me to leave paid work and become a full-time volunteer. The past 10 plus years have been an absolutely hoot, full of fulfilment and never-ending lessons as I try to live my βbest lifeβ.
As Mark Twain said ββThe two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.β
Just dropping in to say, if you havenβt made plans for the last Tuesday of this month, you do now!

In a recent interview, actor Ryan Reynolds shared his honest approach to managing mental health.
π§ Finding Balance: Ryan admits that handling mental health isn't always easy. "Not always great, to be perfectly honest," he says.
π Personal Rituals: He has developed personal rituals to stay grounded and prevent his mind from spiraling out of control. These rituals include meditation and taking time for himself.
π
Avoiding Overbooking: Ryan also highlights the importance of not overbooking himself, recognizing that he tends to do this when feeling overwhelmed.
π€ Shared Experiences: He emphasizes that his methods are relatable and likely similar to what many of us do. "Sometimes I'm really good at it; sometimes I'm not," he confesses.
Ryan's candidness reminds us that even celebrities face mental health challenges and that itβs okay to have ups and downs. Letβs continue to support each other by sharing our own experiences and coping strategies. π

π A Tremendous Boost from Turramurra Rotary! π
We are thrilled to announce that Mentoring Men has received a generous donation of $7,671 from Turramurra Rotary!
This incredible contribution comes from funds raised at the 2024 Bobbin Head "Bobbo" Cycle Classic, a great event that drew over 1,000 cycling enthusiasts with courses up to 105km.
