Remembering an incredible man who dedicated his life to karate and left us all a legacy of educational material …
Today marks the 3rd anniversary of the passing of Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa.
A direct student of Masatoshi Nakayama (and eventually of Gichin Funakoshi), Hirokazu Kanazawa was a major contributor to the development of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) in its early days.
His audacious conquests and idealizations consequently gave him the fame of being one of the most renowned Karate instructors of the contemporary era, being decorated by the International Martial Arts Federation (IMAF) as the first in the history of Shotōkan Karate to reach 10th Dan while still alive! This invaluable prestige conferred by Yasuhisa Tokugawa himself (great-grandson of the last Shōgun of Japan) added to the international acclaim that Hirokazu Kanazawa conquered, guaranteed him, in the opinion of many, the status of Sōke, the highest authority in Shotōkan Karate!

Traditional Shotokan Karate Five Dock Dojo
Our mission is to promote the teaching and studying of Traditional Shotokan Karate. The word karate means "empty hand", and Karate-do translates to "the way of Karate". Shotokan Karate is a weaponless martial art that is founded on the basic techniques of punching, striking, kicking and blocking, there is however a deeper aspect to serious Karate training which deals with character development, respect, discipline and a balanced body & mind. Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese Martial Art founded by Master Gichin Funakoshi.
