Gili Award winner
Ballina Indigenous support worker shines at TAFE NSW Gili Awards 2024
25 June 2024
Bundjalung woman, Ryah Whitby, has been named the 2024 Career Pathways, Aboriginal Languages and Employability Skills Student of the Year at the 34th TAFE NSW Gili Awards.
The TAFE NSW Gili (pronounced Kili) Awards celebrate and recognise the achievements of Aboriginal students and employees who have contributed to Aboriginal communities throughout 2023.
Ryah, who is fuelled by a passion for helping young people, works as an Indigenous Support Worker at St Francis Xavier Primary School in Ballina after successfully completing courses at TAFE NSW Eora.
Ryah’s TAFE NSW teacher, Rebecca Murphy, said she nominated Ryah for the Gili Career Pathways, Aboriginal Languages and Employability Skills Student of the Year Award because of her commitment to the TAFE NSW-Indigenous Police Recruitment Our Way Delivery (IPROWD) program.
“Ryah stood out to me through her personal growth, stepping up and taking on a leadership role to support her peers,” said Rebecca.
Ryah, 19, was working in a chicken shop in Alstonville, in northeast New South Wales, when she moved to Sydney to join the IPROWD program. She looked to pursue a job in the NSW Police Force Youth Command, but the teachers at TAFE NSW Eora inspired and empowered her to pursue a career in teaching.
“I completed a TAFE NSW Certificate III in Mentoring Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People which gave me enough knowledge and confidence to jump straight into the job I’m now in,” Ryah said. “My goal for next year is to do a Bachelor of Education (Primary).”
According to the Australian Teacher Workforce Survey 6,577 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers were registered nationally in 2020, 57% aged under 40. In the non-indigenous workforce 53% were 40-59.
Rebecca said Ryah faced many personal challenges undertaking the IPROWD program, exacerbated by living away from home. “Rather than giving up, she focused her energy on her TAFE NSW studies and excelled,” said Rebecca.
Supported by dedicated staff, Aboriginal Elders, and community members at TAFE NSW Eora campus, Ryah said she has developed a deeper understanding of her Aboriginal cultural identity and hopes to inspire other young people to challenge themselves to achieve success.
“Everyone at Eora shows so much dedication, support, and guidance,” Ryah said. “I’m now trying to get my sister Mia to enrol so she can learn more about her identity as an Indigenous person and how to connect with country.”
