The Veterans Film Festival and film distributor Screen Inc. are proud to present a special screening of the new thriller feature 'Here Be Dragons' including a Q&A with the film's director Alastair Newton Brown, lead actor Nathan Sapsford and our festival chairman Warwick Young CSC, OAM.
About the Film:
David Locke (Nathan Clark Sapsford), a former British soldier turned UN war crimes investigator, faces the prospect of an early retirement. One night, David is approached by a ghost from his past – a victim of the Yugoslav wars named Emir Ibrahimovic. Emir believes that he’s located the notorious and previously presumed dead paramilitary commander Ivan Novak (Slododan Bestic, A Serbian Film), living in plain sight in Belgrade, Serbia.
Despite the disapproval of his superiors, David goes to Belgrade on a solo mission funded by Emir, in order to hunt, capture, and bring to justice the man who has caused so much pain in the world.

The Veterans Film Festival (VFF) Screen Warriors program utilises the transferable skills of Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel to gain pathways into employment in the film & television industry. Presented in partnership with the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), Screen Warriors has received grant funding from Screen Australia’s Transferable Skills & Returning Crew Training Fund.

Screen Warriors: A New Program to Recruit Military Veterans into the Film Industry Screen Warriors will equip former Defence personnel with screen industry training, as well as professional placements and mentoring.

Join other women veterans for an enjoyable evening of networking and refreshments in the beautiful Anzac Memorial.
The event will be facilitated by Sarah Watson, who will share reflections on her experiences as a woman in the Australian Defence Force and as a veteran. Sarah is an Iraq War veteran, Deputy Chair of the RSL NSW Young Veterans Committee and owner of Good2Go Mindset Coaching.

It's the end of a big year for the Veterans Film Festival and we want to wish everyone we connected with, whose art we exhibited, whose film submissions we had the privilege to view, those whose films we we were able to screen, those who attended the festival, our Screen Warrior applicants, and our volunteers, staff, board members, partners, stakeholders and all who made 2022 a great one for the Veterans Film Festival and our launch into Sydney. Stay tuned for some of our favourite moments in 2022 and may everyone have a safe, happy and peaceful festive season no matter how you celebrate it.
Huge congratulation to the winners of the Red Poppy Awards at the 7th annual Veterans Film Festival in Sydney.
Winner of the Howard Frank Van Norton Award for Best Film went to new Australian film TRANSFUSION which also scooped Best Actor award for Sam Worthington (Avatar)
Jennifer Lawrence was awarding the Best Actress Award for CAUSEWAY.
The Spectrum Film Award for Best Short Film went to SOLDIER documentary from Justin Zimmerman (USA).
The Beyond Blue Award for a film best reflecting hope and resilience went THE HEALING, a firm favourite over the weekend that screened in competition and as part of the Closing Night Highlights, with filmmaker Nick Barkla there to accept the award, along with Steve Brodie, the film's protaganist.
The Sergeant Joseph Cecil Thompson Awards for Best Music went to CAUSEWAY composer Alec Somers.
Best Music Video was award to BETTER OFF from veteran songwriter Johnny Reveille, directed Casey Andrews, also a veteran.
Best Student Film was won by THE SEARCH, from veteran US filmmaker Thomas Brouns.
And hats off to Iranian filmmaker Farnoosh Abedi, whose short animation SPRAYER took out the Harry Julius Animation Award this year!
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE FILMS THAT SCREENED OVER THE WEEKEND! We were thrilled to have filmmakers attend, see their films up on the big screen and celebrate the stories about, for and by Veterans, on screen and in our art exhibition with Mike Armstrong's Voices of Veterans incredibly powerful photographs and those from the Persona exhibition of ANVAM
