Michael’s passion and pride for his profession ignited in his first year after graduation, nearly 50 years ago. That was the era when conventional soft contact lenses were sterilised by boiling in saline solution and protein tablets were used every fortnight to clean the lenses.
“Being a member of the CCLSA in the 1970’s and 80’s meant regular meetings to share knowledge, ideas, and learn from the wealth of practical experience gained from everyday practice by a motivated group of committed optometrists. To this day, I am a firm believer that, while formal ongoing education is crucial, so much extra can be learned from interesting conversations with like-minded colleagues over a nice meal and a glass of wine – a template originally put in place by CCLSA.”
Michael Hare is the senior partner of his private, independent Gold Coast practices located in Southport, Benowa, and Burleigh. He is a long-time member of the CCLSA, as well as a former National OA Vice President, QLD State President, and QLD Optometrist of the Year. Michael was the director of the optometry clinic at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and is currently an assessor with OCANZ.
You can join us at ICCLC 2024: THE MATRIX for a fantastic program and many opportunities to network with like-minded optometrists! The conference will be on Friday to Sunday 23-25 August at QT hotel in the Gold Coast.

IACLE opens applications for its 2024 Awards
Four contact lens educators from around the world will travel to Academy 2024 Indianapolis, USA, as winners of the 2024 IACLE Awards.
IACLE Contact Lens Educator of the Year Awards
The International Association of Contact Lens Educators (IACLE) is offering educators worldwide the chance to become an IACLE Contact Lens Educator of the Year and travel to the annual meeting of the American Academy of Optometry in Indianapolis on 6-9 November 2024. The IACLE Contact Lens Educator of the Year title will be awarded to three individuals, one from each of IACLE's three global regions:
• Americas
• Asia Pacific
• Europe, Africa, Middle East
These awards recognize and award achievements in contact lens education and are sponsored by CooperVision. The winners will each receive a bursary of up to US$3,000 towards the cost of attending Academy 2024 Indianapolis this year and permission to use the title ‘2024 IACLE Contact Lens Educator of the Year’ for their region.
The IACLE Contact Lens Educator Awards are open to all contact lens educators who have been IACLE members for at least three years. Applicants can either nominate themselves or be nominated by another member or IACLE staff. Educators must demonstrate how they impact their institutions and inspire their students to become future contact lens practitioners.
Karen Walsh, MCOptom, PGDip, FAAO, FIACLE, FBCLA, Senior Director of Global Professional Affairs, CooperVision, commented on the importance of the IACLE Educator Awards: ‘Advancing contact lens-related care requires excellence and inventiveness across all aspects of the profession. Recognizing top educators who are preparing the next generation of clinicians, researchers, and more is central to that mission and why CooperVision has been a proud supporter of the IACLE awards for years.’
IACLE Travel Awards
The IACLE Travel Awards are bursaries of up to US$3,000, allowing IACLE members to attend a meeting on a national, regional, or international basis. The IACLE Travel Awards are sponsored by IACLE through the generous support of all IACLE’s sponsors (Alcon, CooperVision, Johnson & Johnson Vision, Bausch + Lomb, Ophtecs, Menicon and Euclid).
IACLE President Professor Philip Morgan said: ‘I am pleased to announce that nominations are now open for our 2024 Awards. This year, three Educators of the Year and one Travel Award winner will attend international conferences and receive certificates to celebrate their success. I encourage all our members to consider nominating themselves or a colleague for this highly prestigious recognition. Amy is an optometrist working in a corporate practice that offers orthokeratology. She joined CCLSA to expand her knowledge in fitting specialty contact lenses.
"One of the things I enjoy most about being involved with CCLSA is the opportunity to connect and learn from other practitioners that are just as passionate about contact lenses. It's incredibly rewarding being able to prescribe contact lenses that can make such a big difference in someone's life, improving their vision and overall quality of life. Whether it's through attending the ICCLC conferences, attending the online webinars or interactive workshops, being part of CCLSA has allowed me to provide the most up-to-date care for my patients."

The opportunity for continuous learning and exploration in numerous specialised areas within our profession empowers us to make an even greater impact. This career path constantly presents new challenges that I genuinely embrace, as I firmly believe in the importance of lifelong education.”

Thank you to all those who joined us for our final Vic CCLSA chapter meeting for 2023 on Tuesday, November 21 at the newly relocated Mister Bianco, with Professor Etty Bitton knuckling down and making us think about the ocular lubricants we prescribe.
I know I probably speak for all when I say this was one of the best presentations we've had - and we are fortunate to have many wonderful speakers. Etty was so knowledgeable, succint and engaging. You can see the audience was literally at the edge of their seats!
Of course evenings like this would not be made possible without the generous support of our sponsors - special thanks to CSL Seqirus, Alcon Surgical & Vision Care, Good Optical and Substance HQ.
We love seeing so many familiar faces, but also some new faces from all career stages of optometry. A warm heartfelt thank you to you, our members, because without your loyal support and dedication, our society would not exist.
