When a child learns to read, just imagine what they can do. Reading opens up their world like no other skill. Unlike learning to speak, learning to read is not a naturally acquired skill - it has to be taught. But once learned, it's theirs forever and will enrich the life of any child into adulthood.
Read to me riddles and read to me rhymes.

The first few lessons of the I Can Read programme focuses on revising phonemic awareness and phonics, with students then working through a series of six workbooks. The programme
has a structured reading approach, which introduces the beginning reader to a new sound each lesson, how to visually read and pronounce the sound when it is present in print and how to spell words containing the target sound. Pronunciation and comprehension significantly improve. Children progress to the advanced section of I Can Read from Volume 6 onwards, when reading skills are reinforced and embedded and the student moves towards advanced spelling, grammar, punctuation and expression.

A beautifully written and expertly crafted story will take you on a magical journey from the turn of the first page. You can almost feel the creaking of the boards underfoot and the sway of the bridge as you take your first tentative steps to an unknown destination. This immersive and personal pleasure is what makes reading a book so very special.
Encouraging your child to keep a record of their reading is a really good way to help them gain more from reading time. Try having them keep a small journal and enter the name of the book and the author as they finish each one. Ask him or her to write a few sentences about the book, maybe stimulated by a few questions such as:
• What did you enjoy most about the book / story?
• Who was your favourite character, and why?
• What did you learn that you didn’t know before?
• Would you like to read more books by this author?
This way, your child will be able to articulate the kind of books he or she likes to read. You can use this record to find similar books you know they will like or challenge your child to seek out something new and very different.
Imagine how it feels for a child at school who is struggling with reading. It affects every aspect of their learning, which can make them feel unhappy and withdrawn. The unique I Can Read System can quickly turn things around for any child and give them the skills they need to excel at school. That's why I Can Read students feel happy and confident and always look forward to school in general and English in particular.
I CAN READ is proven effective because of its hierarchical approach to learned skills. The reading program was developed following ten years of research with children affected by dyslexia, ADD and developmental delay, by educational psychologists. Piloted in Australia in 1999 with over 400 children and then in Singapore in 2000 by the Ministry of Education, it has proven effective with children suffering from learning difficulties including reading difficulties, dyspraxia and dyslexia. It is the ideal system for pre-school and primary children who need to learn to read and for children who, for various reasons, have fallen behind their chronological age in their reading age. It is also ideal for students from non-English speaking backgrounds.
I CAN READ is not simply a reading program for early literacy or students with reading difficulties. It is a total literacy learning system, which is open to all ages and all abilities, to all children and adults wishing to acquire and improve English literacy skills.
Our system is unique and proprietary, taught by qualified teachers, and has a 100% success rate over more than 300,000 students. Find out more and book your free diagnostic assessment https://icanreadsystem.com
Research into the way children learn to write clearly indicates that when they are simply assigned writing tasks and have them marked and corrected teaches students nothing about the processes involved in writing. In fact, when taught in this way, students continue to make the same mistakes repeatedly. Consequently, these students refrain from taking risks in creativity for fear of losing marks for incorrect spelling, punctuation, or grammar. The ICR Creative Writing Course teaches children to maintain ownership of, and responsibility for their writing pieces from start to finish. At every step of the writing process, students receive immediate feedback. Time is allotted for individual conferences in which the student learns to self-edit. In this way children learn to evaluate the quality of their writing and ultimately become independent and creative writers.
The library is a very special place. The hushed tones and walls of books to explore make it a wonderful haven for any child. But in this fast-paced world when everyone is so busy, a trip to the library can feel like a luxury of time you just can’t afford. Well, maybe it’s simply a case of re-prioritising. Are all those things you have to do as important as helping your child discover the magic of finding and choosing the amazing books they want to read?
The library is not just a nice space to read books! It’s a place for creativity, learning, researching and even exploring technology. Read our latest article to explore the joys of incorporating the library into your life and your child's routine.

If you have a child scheduled to start school in 2024, consider enrolling now for our I Can Read School Readiness Programme for 2023. Investing in this pre-school learning will pay dividends and give your child the very best start at school.
School readiness describes the emotional, intellectual and social preparedness of a child to attend school, and whether the child is able to make an easy and successful transition. Students who begin school with the appropriate foundation skills in place advance quickly. But many children find themselves starting school, only to then begin the slow process of developing school readiness. These children may be starting school on the back foot at this crucial first stage of their education and confidence-building.

Sight words are subject to recall abilities, and there is a limit to the number of words a child can retain in his or her memory. That’s why decoding skills are so important. Sight words do have a role to play but should not form the basis of reading acquisition. The I Can Read system is structured, cumulative and hierarchical, and is the first system in the world to teach students how to link clusters of letters to single sounds in a unique manner.

If your child is over 3.5 years, now is a great time to get them started with I Can Read. The Little Bears Club is a play-based learning programme, emphasising expressive and receptive English, an introduction to the sounds of the language, vocabulary building, storytime and oral presentation, all in the context of language development.
Qualified teachers work individually with each child to ensure they reach their personal best.
This programme forms the first step on the reading-literacy acquisition journey. For most students it is pre-phonics, because most children at this age are just beginning to develop an ability to associate the spoken language with its attendant sound structures.

Children over three years of age are full of curiosity and eager to learn. They can listen to a teacher, express themselves verbally, expand vocabulary, sing rhyming songs, speak in front of
the group and generally enjoy using and playing with words. Once your child understands that spoken words have little sounds and can relate those little sounds to their graphemes (letters), then he or she can be taught to read. I Can Read is the most successful reading system in the world. It’s simple, it’s a process, and when applied correctly, works every time!

Encouraging your child to read aloud has so many benefits. Not only can you check his or her understanding and pronunciation, but you’ll find it will lead to questions and conversations that will help them engage more deeply with the story and further stimulate their imagination.
Reading aloud means your child is less likely to skip over and avoid difficult works, and, with your encouragement, will aim to decode unfamiliar words, which builds confidence.
You can make reading time a really fun activity your child will look forward to by teaching them to use tone and emphasis and encouraging them to include different voices and sounds.
If your child feels shy about reading aloud, demonstrate by putting on some silly voices yourself and taking turns to read pages until they feel comfortable. They will soon start to enjoy their expressive reading time.
From the age of four, most children are able to appreciate that a spoken word is an assembly of (smaller) sounds (phonemes). The ability to hear and identify the sounds in spoken language is called phonemic awareness and is a prerequisite of learning to read. The I Can Read Preliminary Programme is designed as a foundation programme that precedes learning to read, and prepares your child well for our core I Can Read Programme.
Read more about each stage of our core programme on our website.
Children fall in love with reading because they read with someone they love.
We are all very busy with everyday life, and it’s easy to skip reading time when you have a hundred other things to do. But it really is worth prioritising some quiet reading time with your child. It’s something they look forward to, and as they grow, with fond memories of cuddling up on the sofa with you or being tucked into a cosy bed with a magical bedtime story, you will create a love of reading in your child that will last a lifetime.
We bet you love it too – these are very special moments and more powerful than you can imagine.
Letter writing is a wonderful skill to master – especially when it’s hand-written, which shows you care and that you are happy to dedicate the time and personal attention to the recipient.
There is something very special about writing or receiving a letter. In today’s fast-paced world of email and text-messaging, the time it takes to write a letter, seal, address, and stamp the envelope, and take it to the post box to send across the state, the country, or the world feels somehow sacred, and is very satisfying.

There is a popular assumption that one-on-one learning is preferable to small group lessons, however this is not supported by evidence.
While a child attending a one-on-one ‘private’ lesson is the direct focus of attention, participating in a small group allows your child to feel more relaxed, and better able to reflect and absorb new information more easily. Having studied class numbers over many years, we have found that groups of around 4 – 6 children yield better results for the students than those learning in a one-on-one environment. We believe that unless there are special conditions, students are far better served attending small group lessons.
She’s not just playing, she’s mentally travelling to far off places, meeting incredible people and doing amazing things – she is daydreaming – and that’s a good thing. According to a 2009 University of British Columbia study, a healthy amount of daydreaming is connected to improved critical thinking capabilities and is an invaluable characteristic in successful learners.
When your child is daydreaming, their mind is not just drifting, but actually forming connections between pieces of information, and processing and organising thoughts. Daydreaming makes children better thinkers – and better thinkers make better learners.
