The Galluzzo family are perhaps one of the greatest examples we have ever seen of how brilliantly a family business can serve their community with such loyalty, kindness, integrity and commitment, for such a long time. What an incredible piece of Sydney’s history!
It has been such an honour to work alongside Damian and Joe, and the whole Galluzzo family. We wish them well and look forward to seeing the Galluzzo legacy carry on in the hands of Josh and Daniel.
After 90 years, it’s the end of an era for one of Australia’s oldest family groceries Many family businesses are passed down the generations. When that isn't possible, it can mean the end of an era. And that’s exactly what's happening at the Galluzzo family grocery in Sydney.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers, grandmothers and mother figures, including our wonderful mum. We hope you have a great day.
With so many delicious new season apples to select from, there’s only one dessert we’ll be making our mum for Mother’s Day, and that’s apple pie. While most apples are great in apple pie, our favourite to use are Pink Lady apples (for their natural sweetness), Granny Smith apples (for an apple pie with a little tartness), and Bravo apples (for the way they maintain their white flesh colour, and their delicious taste). Combining different apple varieties in your apple pie is also a great option. Here are our top 3 favourite apple pie recipes:

Fruit is most often associated with a food for snacking, eating raw or incorporating into sweet desserts. Fruit, however, is an excellent, flavoursome and versatile ingredient to incorporate into savoury lunch and dinner dishes. When thinking about cooking dinner, be sure to look through your seasonal fruit options for inspiration. Plums, new season apples and new season pears are our current seasonal fruit favourites, here are some great savoury lunch and dinner dishes to cook with them:

Nashi pears are one of our favourite pears to eat! Originating in Asia 3000 years ago, they were once considered a delicacy for the wealthy. They were originally brought to Australia by gold miners in the 1850s but have only been grown commercially for the last 30 years. Nashi pears are crisp and juicy, with a thirst-quenching sweetness and creamy-white flesh, making them perfect for this hot weather. Try them poached, grilled, baked, barbecued or just sliced fresh – they work perfectly with both sweet and savoury dishes.
Despite their firmness, Nashi pears are a delicate fruit, which is why you’ll often see them covered in a protective net or cuff. Look out for them at your local greengrocer today!
Corella pears are distinguishable by the red blushing on their green and yellow hued skin and are named after the Australian Corella parrot, a native bird known for its bright and colourful plumage. They can be eaten when firm and crunchy or can be left to fully ripen and consumed when soft and creamy. They are aromatic and juicy with a sweet, mild flavour. They are great for slicing through salads, poaching with spices and aromatics, baking into desserts or roasting with pork.
Apple harvest has begun for the year and we are starting to see some wonderful fruit, like these beautiful locally grown Fuji apples and Royal Gala apples.
Generally, apples are harvested between February and May in Australia, after which they are stored in controlled atmosphere rooms all the way through until the next season.
This ensures that Australians can enjoy their favourite fruit the whole year round, and that the apple industry continues to thrive.
The Lunar New Year is celebrated by 1.5 billion people in many countries across Asia – including China, Vietnam, South Korea, Singapore and Tibet. It is traditionally a time to bring families together and many festivities centre around food. Specific dishes are prepared because they symbolise prosperity or luck and eating them is thought to invite both into your life in the year ahead. Eating and gifting certain fruits during Lunar New Year is an important part of the celebrations, as is decorating homes with fruit.
Here are some of the fruits traditionally gifted and consumed during the Lunar New Year, as well as their symbolism:
Apples - wisdom and peace
Grapes - wealth, abundance and fertility
Pomelos - family unity, good luck
Lychees - close family ties
Mandarins - wealth
Oranges - abundance and happiness
Peaches - wealth, abundance, great fortune

With students returning to school this week, it’s more important than ever to ensure the fridge and fruit bowl is well stocked with plenty of delicious and nutritious snacking options. There is so much incredible fruit available right now, all of which is packed with vitamins and nutrients, including plums, peaches, cherries, nectarines, grapes, figs and new season gala apples. Be sure to stock up at your local greengrocer.
Black Splendour plums have a deep blue-black skin and a vibrant red flesh. They have a tart-sweet flavour and are wonderful for eating fresh and cooking with.
We love roasting them with a sprinkle of brown sugar to bring out their sweetness. They’re delicious served with vanilla ice cream or yoghurt, with breakfast cereal or alongside roast pork.
Cut the plums in half and lay them in a baking tray lined with baking paper. Sprinkle with brown sugar and bake at 200 degrees Celsius until the sugar has dissolved and the plums soften, approximately 20 minutes. Allow to cool before removing the seeds and transferring to an air tight container, ensuring all the plum juices are reserved.

Pan fried halloumi cheese with warm honey coated apricots and thyme. Five ingredients simply combined to create a delicious dish in under 10 minutes. It's a great dish to share as a starter or as part of a festive lunch. Perhaps one to add to the Christmas lunch menu this year?
1 tablespoon olive oil
6 small ripe apricots, cut in half & seeds removed
3 tablespoons honey
1/2 cup water
350g halloumi, cut into thin strips
5 sprigs fresh thyme
Heat oil in a medium size pan over high heat. Add apricots, flat side down and cook for 30 seconds. Turn over and cook for a further 30 seconds. Add 1 tablespoon of honey to the pan and allow to sizzle for 10 seconds before adding the the water. Reduce heat to medium and allow to simmer for 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
Place a separate small non stick frypan over high heat and allow to warm. Add the halloumi to the pan and cook on each side until golden. Place the haloumi onto a plate, followed by the apricot halves. Drizzle the apricot pan juices over the dish, drizzle with remaining honey and sprinkle with thyme. Serve immediately.
Koala Cherry season is Damian’s favourite time of year! So there are always ear to ear smiles when he gets the opportunity to step out of the Markets and visit the Rouget Family in Yarck, Victoria, as Koala Cherry season kicks off. We are incredibly proud to work alongside the Koala team to distribute their cherries throughout NSW and the ACT, and look forward to what’s set to be another great season!
