On Thursday 29 August, Kirwan High celebrated Wear it Purple Day! This day is to promote awareness and is a visibility campaign that aims to celebrate the spirit of LGBTQIA+ youth.
We celebrated the day with staff wearing purple in support and with a Wear It Purple stall in the Quad selling popcorn, slushies and pins to fundraise for the campaign. Staff participated in a parade for Best Dressed. Congratulations to Mr Garlando and Ms Reimers for taking out the title. The best dressed staffroom door went to the Humanities Department. The LGBTQIA+ rainbow flag was also flown outside the Administration Office in celebration of the day.
Thank you to our True Colours group for putting together a wonderful event.

Recently, our students attended the launch of the JCU Innovation Place. At the launch, one of our students F1 teams (Speed Demons) spoke with Pat Driscoll, who is an engineer and active community member of DriveIt. The students discussed their upcoming participation at the F1 in Schools State Finals in Mackay.
Following this, Pat and his DriveIt visited the school to meet with the students and see first-hand what they have been working on and towards. Pat and his team provided some valuable feedback about their portfolio and their prototype.
Thank you to Pat and his team for taking the time out of your schedule to visit our students!

Fantastic effort to Year 10 students Maddi Hovasapian, Raini-lee Wilson, and Year 11 students Carla Buse, Brianna-Lilly Gillespie, Ellie Lumb, and Bailey Robinson who participated in their third and final session at the 2024 Australian-ASEAN Youth Summit recently. This session was pivotal as it revolved around the presentation of the Youth Declaration to the Australian Parliament, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.
Special guest speakers at the final session included: Mr Senden from Townsville, who is the First Nations International Engagement Development Officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; Senator the Hon Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs; The Hon Jason Clare, Minister for Education; as well as ambassadors from the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Lao PDR.
A particularly engaging presentation was given by The Hon Dr Anne Aly, Minister for Youth, which focused on innovative communication, creative thinking, and enhanced collaboration among ASEAN nations.
By participating in this Youth Summit, it demonstrated to us all the power of youth voices in shaping a sustainable future.
Some thoughts from our students:
๐ฃ๏ธโThe ability to work in teams and with other people your age around the world was a highlight of this event; our local problems are so similar to that of other countriesโ โ Raini;
๐ฃ๏ธโThe various guest speakers provided a unique experience for career pathways and opportunities and it was inspirational to be able to engage with people who were very passionate about their fieldโ โ Carla;
๐ฃ๏ธโThis program provided me with the opportunity to connect with others and develop my diplomacy skills and knowledge of international issues, as well as seeing how various perspectives are required to solve international issues. While sharpening my communication skills, I found myself truly inspired by the power of our collective voices and the impact we can make togetherโ โ Brianna.
Thanks to Mr Harting who supported our students during this amazing event.
๐ญHow did our students get this opportunity? They are all members of the Humanities and Languages Departmentโs Model United Nations extracurricular program which meets every Tuesday in HU06. Come along if you want to develop your leadership and your global competencies, and embrace being a Global Citizen.
