The very hungry coral polyp 🤭
In perfect timing, AIMS at JCU student Julia Saper caught on camera this coral polyp devouring more than 50 baby brine shrimp within minutes.
The feast came after a long day of limited success experimenting with coral prey – but then, Julia gave this small coral fragment a clump of brine shrimp, not expecting much.
Minutes later the coral was secreting mucus and eating massive amounts of shrimp in a short amount of time.
Julia’s research is focused on developing improved methods to understand how different corals capture and ingest live zooplankton feeds – something, Julia says, that requires a lot of patience.
The research is part of the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program, and is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
