“Mother the Mother” 🌸 Supporting the Postpartum Journey

As yoga teachers, we have a unique opportunity to extend our care beyond pregnancy and into the critical postpartum period. Who was essential in your postpartum journey? Was it a supportive friend, a knowledgeable doula, or perhaps a compassionate yoga teacher? These individuals play a vital role in helping new mothers heal, recover, and connect with their babies.

Offering Post Natal Yoga classes for women in the first 12 months after childbirth can profoundly impact their journey by:

✨ Continuing the connection and community established during pregnancy, with a familiar teacher who knows their practice and personal needs.

✨ Creating a welcoming and accessible space where mums can safely continue their practice, bringing their baby along and adapting as needed.

✨ Providing ‘me-time’ for new mums to focus on their healing and self-care, allowing them to recharge while balancing the demands of caring for a newborn and their family.

✨ Sharing yoga and mindfulness tools that support everyday balance and resilience, helping them navigate the challenges of fatigue, emotional ups and downs, and physical recovery.

✨ Offering access to evidence-based resources and local support networks, empowering mums with the knowledge to make informed decisions for themselves and their babies, whether it’s about returning to work, feeding, or maintaining mental and physical well-being.

✨ Fostering a community of fellow mums to share experiences, joys, and challenges, creating lasting bonds and invaluable peer support.

Let’s be there for these new mums, holding space for them to reconnect with themselves, move gently, and feel supported during this tender phase of life. Every little bit of understanding and care makes a difference. 🌿💕

🫠 Just surviving the School Holidays? Here are some Mindful Tips for Parents 🌟

Surviving the school holidays can be daunting! Here are some scientifically supported strategies to keep you thriving 💕

🤸‍♀️Stay Active: Physical activities, like yoga, are beneficial for the whole family. Yoga improves flexibility, strength, and mental clarity, making it an excellent choice for holiday fun.

😌Mindful Moments: Incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine. Studies show that mindfulness can improve focus, emotional regulation, and overall well-being in children and adults.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒Family Time: Make time for family activities that everyone enjoys. This not only fosters connection but also creates a supportive environment.

📺 Moderate Technology Use: Don’t try to do it all and demonise screen time! Balance screen time with other activities. Encourage your children to explore being BORED! See how creative they can be when screens aren’t an option!

💕Do you practice yoga with your children? We experience phases where our kids are enthusiastic about yoga, then they may lose interest, only to rediscover it later. The key takeaway is that they learn how to breathe and calm themselves, which helps them feel grounded during anxious moments and empowers them to be brave. 💕

Matrescence: The Journey of Becoming a Mother 💕

👶🏼The first 12 weeks post-birth is often called the fourth trimester, a period of profound change, transition, and settling in for the parent, baby, and the entire family. During this time, known as matrescence, the birthing parent undergoes numerous changes. Breasts may become engorged as they prepare for milk production, lochia (bleeding caused by the shedding of the uterine lining) occurs, hormonal changes transpire, and baby blues may set in a few days post-birth. The body also begins recovering from the birth process, whether vaginal or c-section.

💕Alongside these physiological and psychological changes, the birthing parent must care for a newborn, a baby still adapting to the world and wholly dependent on its caregivers for survival and growth. This period can be exhilarating but also presents real challenges. It’s important to acknowledge that it’s okay not to be able to do it all and also okay not to enjoy every aspect of it.

👶🏼To all individuals navigating this phase of matrescence, know that seeking and accepting support can be incredibly beneficial. The changes in your body can be confusing, and it might help to seek support from physiotherapists specialising in pelvic health and other well-being care providers supporting parents and babies.

💕Mindfully moving your body can also be beneficial. Look for parent and baby yoga classes in your neighborhood or go for a walk. If you’re not comfortable stepping out of the home, consider online classes specially designed for postnatal individuals. Moving your body in a supportive way can be helpful for both body and mind. Remember to be gentle with yourselves.🙏🏼

🌟 Seasoned parents… What would you add to the list???

✨GOLDEN HOUR ✨

✨Skin-to-skin contact between a mother and her newborn is an invaluable practice that fosters numerous benefits for both. This immediate, uninterrupted bonding method has gained recognition for its positive impacts, supporting the physical and emotional well-being of both mother and baby.

✨During the “Golden Hour,” the first hour after birth, placing the baby skin-to-skin on the mother’s chest offers an array of advantages. These include stabilising the baby’s temperature, heart rate, and breathing. Additionally, skin-to-skin contact encourages early breastfeeding initiation, enhancing the establishment of a strong breastfeeding relationship.

🧬 Research consistently shows that skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth facilitates the release of oxytocin, promoting maternal bonding and reducing stress levels for both mother and baby. Furthermore, this practice supports the colonisation of the baby’s skin with beneficial bacteria, crucial for the development of their immune system.

💪🏼 Empowerment in childbirth is profoundly influenced by education. Understanding the significance of skin-to-skin contact empowers expecting parents to advocate for and actively participate in this intimate bonding experience. Educating oneself about evidence-based practices like skin-to-skin contact ensures a more informed and empowered birthing experience, laying the foundation for a positive start to the journey of parenthood.

📸 Our Mindful Birth Manager and Lead Educator is pictured here during the golden hour of her 3rd baby. Although Asha’s birth plan changed drastically while in labour resulting in an emergency c-section, she still was able to advocate for herself quite strongly vocalised her need for an uninterrupted Golden Hour due to her empowerment through Birth Education ✨

⁉️ Did you have skin to skin with your baby in the first few minutes? Why? Why not? Was there an evidence based reason that your baby wasn’t given to you straight away? Did you feel you could advocate for what you wanted? Share with us below❤️✨👇🏽

Very exciting things happening over The Yoga Space - Perth & Online!!!

We want to UPDATE you. Something new is happening in Psychology ⚡️. People are realising that we are all more complex than one diagnosis (like Anxiety). Treatments for mental health are changing. Researchers and clinicians 📚️ are looking at what are called:

TRANSDIAGNOSTIC PROCESSES

What are these?

A 'transdiagnostic process' is the label given to a mechanism which is present across disorders, and which is either a risk factor or a maintaining factor for the disorder.

Guess what? YOGA (depending on how it is taught) targets these transdiagnostic processes.

Of course yoga is much more than this. But the science is fascinating AND before one forgets the self, it is necessary to have a stable sense of self. What do you think?

✨Within Mindful Birth's 150-hour Pregnancy, Birth, Baby, and Beyond Yoga Teacher Training, we delve into the profound significance of the fourth trimester.

🤱 After childbirth is a time of immense physical and emotional change as your journey into Matrescence forms. As your newborn adapts to the world outside the womb, you, too, begin your journey into motherhood, focusing on healing and nurturing your postpartum body. 💫

One of the most inspiring aspects of our Yoga Teacher training program is the global community that gathers to exchange experiences and feminine wisdom. 🌍 We come together to share the diverse tapestry of traditions, practices, and rituals inherited from our home countries, mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, and the generations of women who came before us. The fourth trimester is a universally revered and cherished time for the mother-baby Dyad. 🌟

Beyond cultural practices, pregnancy is a perfect opportunity for introspection and contemplation. 🤰✨ It's a moment to identify what truly matters to you and your baby, emphasizing the importance of bonding, connection, healing, and nourishment. Begin your journey by visualizing and preparing for this remarkable time. 💕

📚🧬 Modern science has begun to delve deep into what Mothers have always instinctively known about our intricate connection with our infants; offering compelling supportive evidence that mothers are in-fact biologically wired to hold our babies close!

🌟 Dopamine Dynamics
When a mother cradles her own baby, a remarkable interplay of neurochemistry unfolds. The release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, sets the stage. Critical brain regions, including the midbrain VTA, substantia nigra, striatum, prefrontal cortex, and primary motor area, become active. This orchestration is akin to the brain's way of celebrating this precious closeness.

😁 The Smile Effect:
A baby's smile is a powerful catalyst for these brain regions. The study; ‘What’s in a Smile? - Maternal Brain Responses to Infant Facial Cues’ demonstrates that smiling faces, in particular, activate the nigrostriatal brain regions connected by dopaminergic neurons. What's intriguing is that the response intensity corresponds to the infant's emotional state – happiest for a beaming baby, less for a neutral expression, and least for a sad face.

⏰Ever heard of "Golden Hour"?
It's the first hour after birth when skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby is magical. This contact helps regulate the baby's temperature and heart rate, all while building an unbreakable bond which has been built into our biology since the beginning of time ✨💕

These are just a few examples of the incredible science behind the love and connection between mothers and newborns.

Have you ever viewed pregnancy and birth as a rite of passage?🤰🏼✨

✨Rites of passage foster a sense of renewal, since they mark the beginning of a new phase in our lives.

✨They remind us that we are constantly evolving and that life is a transformative journey.

✨On the other hand, they also provide a sense of belonging.

🌼One of the main purposes of a rite of passage is to help us make sense of change as individuals but also as a community.

🌼Wouldn't it be life changing for women if society viewed pregnancy, birth and motherhood as a rite of passage?

🙋🏼 ⁉️ How do you think this will impact women's birthing experience and the support she receives during motherhood ?
