We are so proud of you Pete, and the hard work you’ve put in over the past 6 months!

A message from Johnny:

Milestone day! For my very first AKP Supports participant Peter! He was born with Aperts Syndrome and then later diagnosed with a range of mental health issues. When I first met Pete, he was an introverted individual who was very set in his ways. After getting to know him, and he became comfortable, he started to open up a little and revealed that he had been battling with alcohol addiction since the passing of his father 7 years ago.

As the months went on and after a gentle nudge for me, he agreed that he should start going to AA. While on the outside it looked as though everything was going great, turns out it actually wasn’t and after a short time Pete revealed that he had stopped going and was a little embarrassed that he had been lying to me the whole time. It wasn’t until he had actually hit Rockbottom and opened up to me again revealing that he had not been paying his full amount of rent each fortnight and had been keeping the extra money to buy alcohol, it was so bad that I had to negotiate with his real estate agent to not evict him and avoid going to NCAT!

After this, and a slightly larger nudge from me Pete headed back to AA and is now a regular sharer and is even offering advice and guidance to new members. Along with this I helped set Peter up with a fortnightly budget to pay back the amount owing in rent (and now he is a fortnight infront) which is stuck to along with a meal prep plan which he has also stuck to and helped him save money plus he has gone and got his L’s and we have been doing driving lessons together, and then to top it all off he decided to try 0% alcohol to see if it was any different and after only a couple of weeks he was completely off the 0% alcohol and today marks exactly 6 MONTHS COMPLETELY SOBER! so I’ve taken him out to his favourite restaurant to celebrate. I’m so proud of him and where he’s come from and that he’s actually stuck to it, he’s looking better feeling better and walks around with a skip, every step now full of confidence and he has lost 12 kg in six months. What a legend!!

Today the K in AKP Supports joined with Jo from WalkbyYou Disability attending the WOMEN's (only) VIP Physical and Mental Health Wellbeing luncheon hosted by ARHG Foundation at the Sage Hotel Wollongong!

We met with some amazing women and heard some inspiring stories!

Our Last Surfing day for the season is only 6 days away .We have had big interest from our Participants and Carers for this event but a BIG CALL now for our Volunteers to register for the event ,so that we have enough support to take the 45 participant surfers into the water safely. We all know from last season that Port Kembla is a great location and our event runs well ,But we need Numbers .

Parking restrictions have changed from last season as the closest car park to the beach/pool in now 4 hr only so we suggest parking on the southern side of the surf club and then just walk back along the foot path to our rego location on the promenade between the pool and the Beach.

Today we volunteered at the Disabled Surfers Association South Coast Gerroa event 🏄‍♀️
