US Cotton Futures :
Cotton Closes Off Highs, but Still in Black on Monday: Cotton futures were 15 to 57 points higher at the close to start the week. December ended the day 65 points off the high after a 119 point ranged session. USDA’s NASS reported 45% of cotton bolls have yet to open as of 9/17. That is 3 ppts ahead of average. The report had harvest advancing 1% point of the week to 9% complete. That compares to 10% on average, though TX was marked at 20% harvested compared to 18% on average. Cotton conditions were 4 points lower on the Brugler500 to 271. At the state level, NASS showed AZ and LA worsened by double digits, while VA improved by double digits. Chinese Custom’s data had 180k MT of cotton imports for August. That was up 62% from Aug ’22. The year-to-date total was 37% lower than 2022 with 860k MT through August. The Cotlook A Index for 9/15 was a penny stronger at 98.5 cents. USDA’s weekly Cotton Market Review had 9,947 bales sold at spot for an average price of 81.19 cents/lb. The AWP for cotton was lowered 1.6 cents to 71.95 cents/lb. ICE Certified Stocks were 2,652 bales on 9/8.

Pakistan :
Cotton market: Firm trend amid modest trading activity: LAHORE: The local cotton market on Monday remained steady and the trading volume remained low. Cotton Analyst Naseem Usman told Business Recorder that the rate of cotton in Sindh is Rs 18,500 to Rs 19,000 per maund. The rate of Phutti in Sindh is in between Rs 8,000 to Rs 9,000 per 40 kg. The rate of cotton in Punjab Rs 19,000 to Rs 19,500 per maund and the rate of Phutti in Punjab is in between Rs 8,000 to Rs 8,200 per 40 kg. The rate of cotton in Balochistan is Rs 18,500 to Rs 19,000 per maund while the rate of Phutti is in between Rs 8,500 to Rs 9,500 per 40 kg. Around, 600 bales of Saleh pat, 400 bales of Rasoolabad were sold at Rs 18,700 per maund, 1000 bales of Tando Adam were sold at Rs 18,000 to Rs 18,500 per maund, 600 bales of Shahdad Pur were sold at Rs 18,300 to Rs 18,500 per maund, 400 bales of Tunsa Shareef were sold at Rs 19,200 per maund, 1800 bales of Layyah were sold at Rs 19,100 to Rs 19,500 per maund, 600 bales of Raj an Pur were sold at Rs 19,200 per maund, 200 bales of Donga Bonga , 200 bales of Mianwali were sold at Rs 19,500 per maund, 200 bales of Chichawatni were sold at 19,400 per maund and 600 bales of Dera Ghazi Khan were sold at Rs 19,500 per maund. Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association has released the data of cotton production in the country till September 15, according to which during this period cotton production in the country was 39 lac and 34 thousand bales compared to 17 lac and 47 thousand bales which is around eighty percent more as compared to the same period last year. The Spot Rate remained unchanged at Rs 19,000 per maund. The rate of Polyester Fiber was increased by Rs 5 and was available at Rs 383 per kg.

Chinese manufacturers to help textile industry: September 19, 2023 - BEIJING: A leading Chinese manufacturer, specializing in textiles auxiliaries and organic silicone products, has partnered with local agents to provide vital technological support to address key challenges faced by the textile printing and dyeing sector, ultimately enhancing its competitiveness on the global stage. “The textile industry is a pillar of Pakistan’s economy, but it faces significant challenges, including energy shortages and cotton yarn scarcity. Many local textile factories are shifting toward a higher proportion of polyester fabrics, and Chinese chemical fibre suppliers can provide the ideal raw materials for these evolving textile categories,” explained Xing Pingping, Overseas Sales Manager of Ningbo Runhe High-tech Materials Company Limited. Faisalabad, serving as a core textile industrial city, is home to nearly 300 dyeing factories, and it was in this city that Ningbo Runhe and their Pakistani agent, FairChem International, organized a textile seminar. Over 150 local industry professionals attended the event, where they explored opportunities for growth and innovation. Pakistan’s textile exports reached $19.32 billion in fiscal year 2022, a year-on-year increase of 25.3% and accounting for nearly 61% of the country’s total merchandise exports. However, challenges such as cotton shortages and lower profit margins in some fabric categories have affected the industry’s global competitiveness. Xing emphasized that digital textile printing holds significant growth potential for the industry, given the ongoing energy shortages in the country. Cotton output jumps despite pest attack: September 19, 2023 - LAHORE: Notwithstanding the ongoing heat wave, poor picking and bugs attack, at least 0.9 million bales of raw cotton reached ginning factories during the last two weeks in the country keeping the hopes alive for a much better crop this year as compared with the last season. The figures released by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) for the first fortnight of September reveal that around 3.93m bales were produced till Sept 15 which is 1.74m bales or 80 per cent more than 2.18m bales by this time last year. As per cotton production breakup, Sindh produced over 2.389m bales against 1.11m bales last year which shows an increase of 115.26pc, while the output in Punjab was 1.545m bales against 1.076m bales last season, an increase of 43.47pc. The data shows that the exporters, including an international firm, have so far bought over 0.221m bales against just 3,080 bales last year; textile spinners more than 3.3m bales against 1.76m bales (an increase of 88pc) last season. Whereas, ginning factories are holding a stock of 0.40m bales, around 5.25pc less than last year’s figure of 0.422m bales. The fortnightly flow was recorded at 892,742 bales against last season’s 646,883 bales for the same fortnight (Sept 1-15). There is, however, a difference of views between ginners and brokers on the phutti or raw cotton arrivals. Cotton Ginners Forum chairman Ihsan-ul-Haq says the arrival of 0.893m bales during the fortnight is less than the expected output of 1.1m bales and attributes this drop in production to whitefly attack in the cotton belt of Punjab which has damaged about 0.5 to 0.7m bales of lint. Pakistan Cotton Brokers Association Secretary Sundas Ayub believes that the PCGA’s arrival figures are in line of the market expectations given the high temperature in the cotton-producing areas. She hopes that the raw cotton flow is likely to improve in the coming days as the weather is getting conducive to the crop. However, the cotton prices seem steady in view of strong buying interest from mills to fetch quality lint, she adds. Mr Haq says that the area under crop in Punjab was less than claimed by the agriculture authorities. Quoting an official of the Punjab Crop Reporting Services, he says that the data collected through the geographical information system (GIS) reveals the cotton sown on 3.5m acres against the official claims of 4.8m acres. Also, he says, the department has not submitted the acreage data collected by Suparco’s satellite facility. Karachi Cotton Brokers Forum chairman Naseem Usman says that despite all issues the cotton arrival figures for Sept 1-15 give the hope that total production would be around 9m bales. He, however, expresses concerns about the quality of cotton presently being hauled to ginning units and predicts a significant difference in rates for average cotton and quality cotton during the coming weeks. He puts the likely local consumption at 12.5m bales and says that the textile industry has so far struck import deals for 2.2-2.5m bales, while import of around 1.5m more bales will be required to meet the needs of the spinning industry. Cotton dropped on profit booking amid demand concerns from the top buyer China: 2023-09-18: Cotton candy prices closed down by -0.23% at 60,840 due to profit booking, triggered by concerns about China's demand, a major buyer. U.S. cotton projections for 2023/24 show higher beginning stocks but lower production, exports, and ending stocks. Unexpectedly large warehouse stocks in July 2023 also contributed to higher beginning stocks for 2022/23. The U.S. production forecast for 2023/24 dropped by 860,000 bales, primarily in the Southeast and Southwest. Consumption remains unchanged from August, while exports decreased by 200,000 bales, resulting in 100,000 bales lower ending stocks. The season-average price for upland cotton in 2023/24 is projected at 80 cents per pound, up 1 cent from the previous month. Globally, cotton projections for 2023/24 include lower beginning stocks, production, consumption, trade, and ending stocks compared to the previous month. In India, cotton sowing has decreased by 3.65 lakh hectares compared to the previous year due to poor monsoon conditions in Gujarat, mill closures, and low stock of old cotton crops. The new cotton crop has started arriving in parts of North and South India with prices above the minimum support price (MSP). Arrivals are expected to increase after September 15. Cotton picking is set to gain momentum in Telangana by the second or third week of November. From a technical perspective, fresh selling is observed as open interest increased by 1.04% to settle at 97. Prices dropped by -140 rupees. Key support for Cotton Candy is at 60,660, potentially testing 60,490 if breached. Resistance is likely at 61,000, with a possible test of 61,170 if prices move above this level.
