Rrubeli is an itinerant public programme organised by Zinaïda Tchelidze, which builds on the Georgian tradition of the meal as a moment of exchange and performance. Led by two guest toastmasters, Rrubeli stages intersections between visual art and culinary culture:

➤ 15 May (14:00 & 16:00): Shalva Nikvashvili, TAMADA

Shalva Nikvashvili takes a personal look at the iconic if problematic character of the toastmaster in his native Georgia. The so-called "tamada", who is always male, traditionally sets the tone and rhythm of a meal.

➤ 16 May (13:00, 15:00 & 17:00): David Bernstein, The Chair on Its Side

David Bernstein tells the autobiographical story of his obsession with chairs and their positions. His performance combines thoughts on abstraction, animism, and mysticism, prompting a re-imagination of what a chair position can mean.

The performances take place during the Antwerp Art Weekend in the context of Hatice Pinarbasi & Zinaïda Tchelidze's duo exhibition at the Refectory, AAIR’s project space for artists in residence in the Dominican monastery. Sign up for your preferred time slot via bit.ly/2SiqEZH.

A group of artists of the Advanced Master of Research in Art & Design 2019-20 at Sint Lucas Antwerpen have collaborated to make the online exhibition Vapori. The exhibition will be online 24/24 on www.visualcontainer.tv/vapori until the 1st of June. Including work by AAIR residents Paz Ortuzar (current), Anna Housiada and Pierre-Antoine Vettorello (former).

"This digital exhibition is the cause and effect of maintaining contact between a group of artists. We have developed strategies of tele-presence, tele-sharing, tele-vision, and tele-exhibition. The works were created during a digital relational process that began in October 2020. Our blog collects the input and leftovers we carried both individually and together to create connections and reflections on our research during our virtual cafés together."

Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens Het museum Dhondt-Dhaenens biedt een culturele moza

During his residency at AAIR, Pierre-Antoine Vettorello recreates the archive of a forgotten black woman who has played a role in textile and fashion in Antwerp.

Vettorello’s project starts with a mapping of African textile stores in Antwerp gathering histories and testimonies to then recreate the presence of this forgotten character. He uses a combination of archival material, interviews and speculation to rewrite some garments.

The first two photos are from ‘Photographers from Kinshasa’, a beautiful book published by R***e Noire.

Tijdens zijn residentie bij AAIR, recreëert Pierre-Antoine Vettorello het archief van een vergeten zwarte vrouw die een rol speelde in textiel en mode in Antwerpen.

Vettorello’s project begint bij het in kaart brengen van Afrikaanse textiel winkels Antwerp, waar hij geschiedenis en getuigenissen verzamelt om dan de aanwezigheid van zijn vergeten figuur te reconstrueren. Hij combineert archiefmateriaal, interviews en speculatie om kleding te "herschrijven".

De eerste twee foto's komen uit ‘Photographers from Kinshasa’, een mooi boek uitgegeven door R***e Noire.

Daniel Cabral is currently a resident at AAIR, where he took up a strict ascetic regimen investigating notions of discipline that permeate the practices of artists, bodybuilders and monks. This research has been carried at a studio in the former Dominican monastery, where he opened his ‘artist’s gym’ to others.

These visual experiments in video, photography and performance originated from his daily practices, habits and rituals. “Daily pills of content”, as he calls them, can be found on his IG 💊

Laurens Otto is aangesteld om de tentoonstellingen, de publicaties en het collectiebeleid van het museum verder te ontwikkelen. Otto heeft eerder gewerkt als curator bij Het HEM, Human Activities en Council. In maart 2021 opent zijn groepstentoonstelling What Stories Want in AAIR en Extra City in Antwerpen. Otto is tevens actief als criticus en als hoofdredacteur van RESOLUTION Magazine.

The new AAIR publication ‘Peer Production’ maps a web of connected thoughts and contributors.

Launched on January 31st with five different covers, the publication binds the practice of five one-year residents, to that of the people they chose to engage with. The result is beautifully designed by Julie Peeters.

In 2021, AAIR will continue to provide space and support to emerging artists in Antwerp. We are now welcoming applications for a new five-month development residency taking place between April 2021 and January 2022. • 24/7 access to the shared residency house at Ploegstraat 27

Due to the newly announced measures, the four-day studio exhibition by Anna Godzina turned into a one-day event that ended yesterday. The duo exhibition by Zoë Field & Katinka de Jonge at AAIR also closed its doors prematurely as of today. We thank the artists for sharing their work, ideas and experiences in this challenging context. In the meantime, we continue supporting artists in less public yet durable ways, while we reflect on the present moment and the times ahead, and how artist-oriented organizations can also be infrastructures of care in times of great need.

Daniel Cabral is invited for a three-month residency between January-March 2021 as recipient of the AAIR Wild Card, a yearly initiative that provides artistic guidance and financial support to a visual artist graduating from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts or Sint-Lucas Antwerp. The jury was composed of Guy Woueté (artist), Joanna Zielińska (senior curator, M HKA), and Caroline Dumalin (artistic director, AAIR).

Daniel responds: "It warms my heart to think that my watercolors got the jury’s attention. My close ones know of my long-lasting relationship with watercolor and to be back to it under this circumstance feels very full circle. Many thanks to the jury who visited the Master expo at Sint Lucas for the opportunity. It is even more special when you are in a foreign land dealing and understanding your place (professionally or personally) to have your work supported in this way."

Intussen zijn onze laatste spullen verhuisd en hebben we de Eikelstraat dus écht verlaten. We kijken terug op een fijne periode in de voormalige Wasserij Goossens vol mooie projecten en tentoonstellingen. De komende maanden zijn we druk in de weer met de realisatie van onze nieuwe expositieruimte in het Dominicanenklooster op de hoofdsite van AAIR. Onze deuren (her)openen zich voorjaar 2021. We houden je op de hoogte!

Our last stuff has been moved, which means we now have truly left the Eikelstraat. We look back on many wonderful projects and exhibitions organized at these former premises of Goossens laundry. In the coming months we are working on the realization of our new, exciting exhibition space in the Dominican Monastery on the main site of AAIR. Our doors here will (re)open in spring 2021. We’ll keep you posted!

For five days during Every Inside Has an Outside, Guy Woueté - En quête de marges fluctuantes affirm through artistic projects the importance of public space as a place where to raise political concerns and share artistic experiences. Behind AAIR’s walls, both Laure and Vedran occupy studio spaces. Happy for this opportunity to host them on the other side of the wall!

Four Flags is an initiative by Julia Mullié and Nick Terra with the support of Siska Bulkens and Louis-Philippe Van Eeckhoutte. New flags appear weekly and travel around 8 non-profits in Belgium, including also Netwerk Aalst, KIOSK, Kunsthal Gent, Be-Part, Platform voor actuele kunst, La Loge, Cc Strombeek and CIAP Kunstverein.

AAIR and RAVI organize an annual exchange program for visual artists from the Flemish and Wallonian regions of Belgium.

Artists based in Flanders can apply until 15/07 for a residency of three months in Liège, from 1 October - 31 December 2020.

Good news! After being forced to work behind closed doors for several months, starting July, RAAT will be presenting the projects that have been selected by an independent jury after the open call. The open city lab will finally start fulfilling its purpose.

The first project is ‘AND THE SAP WILL FLOW UPWARDS - SAP LAB’. Anne Marie Sampaio, Lucy Cordes Engelman and Paz Ortúzar reflected on alternative forms of presentation in times of corona, and propose the physical and virtual space of their SAP LAB as a sharing space of cohabitation, dialogue and collaborative creation.
