Blaackbox

The Elephant Mask is one of the most recognizable traditional African masks of Cameroon.

Made with two separate parts, it is worn at the Bamileke royal court, a symbol of power to be admired by all.

A Bamileke prince himself, artist Franck Kemkeng Noah invites us to discover his culture, simultaneously building bridges with Western architecture, the Moderns, and the African inspirations present in the work of JM Basquiat.

Franck Kemkeng Noah often paints on the back of discarded carpets found in the street.

For the artist carpets are symbols of migratory flows and the shadow economy, abandoned home objects charged with energy and narratives.

This one is titled « Les Demoiselles Amazones I » (2023) and measures 160x230 cm.

Visit the exhibition until Saturday March 16.

À Genève, ne manquez pas la première exposition de l’artiste américano-congolais Bayunga Kialeuka - à la galerie Les Arts du Soleil (Carouge).

À travers The Hurt of Darkness, le peintre dévoile un ensemble de portraits intimes captés lors d’un séjour récent à Kinshasa.

Telle une muse, la femme représentée sur cette toile revient souvent dans l’œuvre expressionniste de Kialeuka, qui cherche à documenter les mœurs et les représentations sociales de son temps, dans une trilogie qu’il intitule Le Perpétuel Migrant, à cheval entre Miami, Kinshasa et Bruxelles.

Valerius’s Mid-Summer Night Walk is a dual homage to Valerius de Saedeleer, the famous 19th century Flemish expressionist born in Aalst, and to the chaos of the night from Shakespeare’s Mid-Summer Night Dream, known for its early investigation of mise en abîme.

In this large scale canvas, long of four meters, Thiemoko Claude Diarra uses his own face to create a wandering spirit of the enchanted forest, on a quest for ego et vanitas.

The rooster and references to the tradition of Dutch glass bubbles are but mere distractions for a world in perpetual rebirth, a metaphor dear to the artist in his definition of identity and art.

The work is part of a new series investigating sacred blendings in a new solo at the gallery.

CULT is a new series of eight paintings on canvas and carpet, which we present for the first time. This recent corpus looks at figures, objects and traditions associated with a cult, which are decontextualized as well as artistically and symbolically blended by the Franck Kemkeng Noah to create a new contemporary assembly of veneration and devotion, simultaneously interrogating notions of pop culture and iconography.
