Believe it or not, this common misconception nearly stopped me from pursuing my dream of becoming a wedding planner.

Back in high school, we had career day where we met with professionals in fields we were interested in, to see what the reality of the industry is, so we can make better choices about our further education and future career field. I chose wedding planning, thrilled to dive into a world of joy and glamour. I remember being sooooo excited, I showed up in my best outfit with a huge smile, ready to hear all about this amazing career.
But the wedding planner I met was completely burned out. She cared me into thinking that becoming a planner meant being on call 24/7, jumping out of bed at 2 a.m. if a bride needed me. She made it sound like my life as I knew it would be over.

At the time, I didn’t know any better, so I chose another path. Now I realize she simply didn’t have healthy boundaries in her business, while it was her responsibility to set those and communicate them to her clients from the get go.

That’s why I make a point of setting clear expectations with my couples from the start. In our onboarding meeting I clearly define how our relationship will go moving forward, and what my communication practices are, so I can provide the highest level of service and be the best version of myself. Because no planner can be effective if he or she is overwhelmed and overworked with no time to disconnect and recharge. And it's our job not to let that happen.😊🤍

But I'm curious of your thoughts. Do you expect a planner to be available 24/7?

A traditional bouquet toss ~ yes or no?🤍

It's a fun tradition that symbolizes passing on the luck of love to the next bride-to-be. It can be a joyful, lighthearted and often competitive way for the bride to celebrate her single friends and wish them luck in love. Many brides look forward to this moment ~but what if the bouquet toss isn’t quite your style?
If it feels awkward, or if you don’t have single friends, there are plenty of creative ways to put a little spin on this tradition! 😊

You could present the bouquet to your parents after a thank-you speech, gift it to the longest-married couple during a fun dance game, or even keep it and turn it into a keepsake for your home decor.🤍 After all, you've spent enough money on it, haven't you?

Some people worry that by hiring a wedding planner, they will miss out on the fun of the preparations, and lose control over their own wedding day.
They worry that nobody else will be able to see and execute their vision exactly the way they imagined, so they decide to keep it all to themselves.
I personally think it's perfectly normal if you have difficulties delegating the preparation of such a significant event of your life. Who wouldn't? 😊

However! A wedding planner is not there to take away your joy, or to deprive you of any fun during the planning process. Quite the contrary! 😉

This is why I chose to be the guiding light and supporting rock for fellow expats planning their wedding in Belgium. Having been through the emotional rollercoaster and the administrative mess myself, I know how invaluable it can be to have someone by your side ~ especially when navigating it all in a foreign country, far away from your safety net at home.

When I was little, I have always tried avoiding conflicts and finding peace around me wherever I was. I grew up being the second of three children.. so being THE middle sibling. Now anyone who is a middle sibling would agree that it definitely has it's unique challenges and it teaches you some very useful skills and lessons about life.😊
I have often found myself in the middle of fights about silly things - and I would always try to keep myself out of it. I would literally retreat to the couch and rather watch my brother and sister fight from far far away.😅
I believe this may have been my natural coping mechanism with difficult and uncomfortable situations involving tension and conflict.

Luckily as I grew up, life has taught me that not all conflicts are bad. Some are simply inevitable, others can even be good to have, and it's how you handle the conflict that matters. I have a very very fine sensor when it comes to picking up on negative vibes and frustration from people around me, so I can spot a conflict coming from a mile away. Now rather than running away from it and just ignoring it's existence overall, I would proactively deal with it before it grows into something even bigger and more difficult to resolve. Both my personal and professional experience have taught me that it's all about actively listening to the other person in those situations, in order to understand the reason behind their feelings. Because more often than not, their frustration will have nothing to do with the actual conflict, but will have a much deeper and more serious cause.
Now I'm not an expert at conflict resolution and I will definitely keep learning my entire life, but I very consciously try not to let my own emotions blind me in difficult situations. I push myself to stay completely focused on what the person is telling me and respect them with my undivided attention.

This approach has proven to be extremely valuable for me. It allowed me to learn so much about people and helped me put out many fires before they would burst into huge flames.🤍
