Last week we kicked off the contruction of primaryschool ‘De Regenboog’ in Ghent. By now designing schools is part of our DNA. The school campus has been clogged by a proliferation of temporary classroom units and ground-floor prefabricated pavilions. The fragmented buildings and pavements are replaced by a compact two-storey school building that creates ‘more’ school on less pavement and leaves more space for nature. The site will also be visually opened by clearing a central axis where the full length of the plot will be made palpable.
Green exterior structures make the building elements identifiable: the terrace marks the formal entrance to the school; a small ‘gabled roof canopy’ characterises the kindergarten playground; a less small canopy typifies that of the primary school.
The school divides the site into two zones: to the south, a succession of playgrounds; to the north, an external access road along the water landscape of wadis. The common areas on the ground floor therefore each have two entrances and can be broadly used for external users from the neighbourhood.

EVR on the road: Yesterday the entire team visited our ongoing and completed projects in the capital city. We kicked off at The Learning and Innovation Center for and in collaboration . Just up the road from there is completed for the same clients in collaboration with en . After a lunched organised by our fabulous office manager Linde, we hopped on the bus and continued to the Marais neighbourhood in central Brussels to visit a future construction site to refurbish a brutalist structure from 1980s. Staying in tune with our focus on sustainability, we concluded our field trip at the recently completed recycling centre for , close to the Buda Bridge in collaboration with .
The new office building for ‘De Watergroep’ in the Koning Boudewijnstraat, near St. Peter’s Station, consists of a four-story main building and a meeting hub at the back of the site. The main volume facing the street was conceived as a multi-use office unit divisible for each floor; the garden volume contains all meeting amenities, cafeteria, bicycle storage and sanitary facilities. Both volumes are connected by a patio and a glazed connecting axis.

rhythmic slats by evr-architecten shade sustainable ghent campus evr-architecten transforms campus into eco-conscious facility Through sustainable design and practices, evr-architecten and Bureau Bouwtechniek transform the ACV-CSC-METEA campus in Ghent, Belgium, into an environmentally conscious facility. In collaboration with , based on a dynamic daylight and shading study, a sophisticated balance between daylight access, shading, direct exterior visibility and maintenance parameters were developed to achieve the right dimensions of the fins and grid dimensions of the façade. The vertical deep wooden slats keep out direct sunlight, while the soft-white lacquered horizontal fins reflect diffused daylight well into the offices.
By inclining the vertical louvres in different directions, the strongest peaks in daylight exposure can be levelled out throughout the day. The wooden slats, composed of thermally treated boards in FSC-pine, not only provide passive sun protection for the various office floors, but also give the building a rhythm and appearance.

This week, the renovation of the facades of the ‘Muziekcentrum De Bijloke’ were officially inaugurated. The concert hall is the world’s oldest venue of its kind. An austere approach was chosen for the modern part in order to emphasize the historical imagery value of the 13th-century infirmary.

This afternoon Bart Verstappen will give a lecture at Usquare Feder during an event organised by ‘BVA the professional association of Flemish architects’.
The professional association is using the Davos Baukultur Quality System as its framework. This system, which has European, federal and regional support, puts forward eight criteria for a ‘high-quality building culture’.
Governance - Functionality - Environment -Economy - Diversity - Context - Sense of place - Beauty
From 16h we will engage in a debate to deepen the role of the architect and the professional association. The project will be explained from three perspectives: from the perspective of the city (), the client , and and the architects team: , and .
Afterwards, we are happy to engage with you to explore the project.

We are very happy to announce that the building permit for our Ten Dries project in Landegem has been submitted 💪. For us inclusiveness and a small-scale approach were very important in the design of this project.
Care and education are central in this project. The MFC Ten Dries (semi-boarding school and boarding school for minors) and the special needs primary school, BuO Ten Dries provide education, therapy, and support to around a hundred children with motor and/or multiple disabilities.
In this project housing for four groups with eight rooms will be created. They will be grouped two by two in a ‘double residence’. The connection of the ‘houses’ creates a high-quality green inner area, closed off from its immediate surroundings. The living spaces open onto this inner space via the more private outdoor areas and are each oriented to the south, which means that the bedrooms mainly face north and west. High-performance acoustic facades and balanced ventilation provide the necessary comfort at night.
Within each of the groups, the same spatial organisation will be maintained: along the northern outer surface of the volume are the individual bedrooms, in the centre are the supporting functions such as storage rooms and bathrooms, and on the sunny side of the volume is the communal daytime area with living space and kitchen. Along the side of the bedrooms, a limited green buffer will guarantee privacy and shelter, while the living spaces are oriented towards a more open and accessible outdoor space and/or panoramas without interacting too directly with another group or adjacent plot.

Yesterday, on 15th of February, the ‘Vrije Universiteit Brussel’() and ‘Université libre de Bruxelles’ () presented their new international research centre during an official inauguration ceremony.
Located in the imposing main building of the .brussels project, the new centre focuses on research into sustainable development, education, knowledge dissemination, entrepreneurship and innovation. Both universities see the initiative as a way to strengthen their urban engagement and to bridge the gap between academia, the city and its inhabitants.
The works on the impressive main building of the former Fritz Toussaint barracks are completed after almost two years. Six buildings at the front of the General Jacques Avenue have been transformed into an academic centre jointly managed by the and . The Usquare.Brussels site covers 3.85 hectares and includes 22 buildings with a total of 56,500 m² of space. The project represents a research and education centre and will also serve as a living laboratory open to other campuses and the city in general. It will house the following actors: , .brussels, , , .eu, .brussels, . There are also multifunctional spaces, including meeting and seminar rooms, offices for staff, flexible workspaces for guest researchers, a café and a reception area.
We are very proud to have been able to collaborate on this exciting project together with , ,

Eric Goens’ new television series kicked off on Tuesday 6 February on Vrt1. In it, Goens follows the ins and outs of a school for special education, De Rozenkrans in Oostduinkerke for a year. ‘Inspirant aan zee’ supports young people from 13 to 21 years old who have or are suspected to have a mental disability, possibly in combination with behavioural and emotional problems, autism or other additional disabilities.
The design is from evr-architecten 💪. The interesting project was completed in 2016. We chose for an efficient and compact programme where the classrooms, administration, workshops and sports hall are organised along horizontal and vertical circulation axes.
An existing volume was included in this system. Efficient and double use of space was key, so the roof of the sports hall was accessible as a sports field. By doing this we ensured that the vegetable garden could be preserved as a whole, even enhanced, and made much more accessible. In terms of finishing, we chose materials that were robust but colourful and matched the yellow brick masonry typical for the region.

Great news! Green light for Rinkkaai's building permit: Alides and CORES Development are developing a new neighbourhood along Fabiolalaan, close to Ghent-Sint-Pieters station and the Blaarmeersen.
The urban development company Sogent acts as coordinator of the project and is responsible for the realisation of a bicycle bridge to the Blaarmeersen and the realisation of the adjacent neighbourhood park.
The architectural concept envisions an ensemble of six compact pavilions, each with its own character yet a clear common identity. The shape, position, height and use of materials of these buildings are carefully chosen, and stand in a strong relationship with their surroundings. The urban design positioning and staggered arrangement of the opposing buildings create valuable green in-between spaces and several vistas from each dwelling.
Social sustainability, sustainable project financing, participation and cooperation with the neighbourhood play an important role in the sustainability concept of this neighbourhood. The project will be built according to BEN principles: a highly energy-efficient building shell combined with renewable energy from geothermal energy. In addition to maximum reuse of rainwater, grey water will also be purified and reused on the site itself.
This project will create a new urban district for a wide variety of groups. A wide range of housing typologies will provide energy-efficient housing for young families, couples, cohousing and seniors with different care needs.

Happy to announce that our project Buda with for the Brussels Region is nearly completed. This project entails the complete makeover of an industrial site for sustainable waste and materials management. The site is organised into clear strips for optimal processing and circulation. It has a clear and open connection to the canal.
The built programme consists of a three-layer head building with reception, staff rooms, sanitary facilities, and offices. The wooden portico is like a spine at the head of the building along the canal. It a true urban interface and a highlight for the agency on the canal.
This sustainable passive project will become the reference for all future constructions and renovations of the Brussels Net Agency/ Agence Bruxelles Propreté.

Construction will start at our project before the holidays. This project in the center of Roeselare involves replacing a large commercial building with 96 residential units and a modest program for commercial functions and the liberal professions. The site is currently very crammed and will have a new sunlit and green inner area around which people will live. The striking double-height opening on ‘Zuidstraat’ seeks a connection with the ‘Klein Seminarie’ across the street.
The project brings innovation, clarity, quality of life…, but also radiates respect for its historical context in its materialization, facade construction and detailing. The main materials are architectural concrete and wooden joinery and facade panels. The recessed roof floors are finished in white glass mosaic.

On the 8th of December, our team submitted the planning application for our “OPEN_UP” project, just 14 months after winning the competition organised by (the project owner)! Well done to the whole team!
The project involves the major renovation of a 60,000 m2 former bank building into a multifunctional site comprising around a hundred apartments (including co-living), offices, local shops, a medical centre, a conference centre and a roof top with an orangery. The project is ambitious both from an energy point of view it’s passive and BREEAM excellent and in terms of circularity.

Tomorrow we have a presentation about our project Usquare in collaboration with , and . Bart one of our partners will talk about how circularity was a key objective from the beginning of this project.
He will outline Usquare as a circular urban district, a circular building and when it comes to circular tendering.
The commercial programme includes about 17.000 sqm of offices, spin-off and research buildings spread over two sites that are located around an office courtyard and adjacent to a public park. We aim to reintroduce nature to the area and encourage biodiversity by introducing the concept of sustainable corridors. Our design will develop the neighbourhood as a car-free, family-friendly urban area. The project also plays an important role in the realisation of the supra-local Green Axis 4. This green axis will eventually become one of the dominant “green fingers” and soft traffic axes of the city of Ghent.

The residential buildings are characterised by a strong identity. On the one hand, there is unity through a constrained palette of materials and colors, on the other, there is diversity through volume, rhythm of the facades and technical detailing.
Throughout the project 25% of all units is conceived as family friendly housing in a broad typological diversity: ground floor apartments, townhouses, split level houses, stacked townhouses etc.
The ground-level housing has a private garden adjacent to a communal garden. The composition of the buildings in each cluster creates a more shielded and enclosed shared green outdoor space for the project’s residents.
Besides the architectural aspect expressed, in the composition and design of the buildings and landscape, the site’s water management is also addressed. Several infiltration basins are implemented in the surrounding landscaping to allow all excess rainwater from the site to infiltrate directly and naturally into the soil. This is both for the rainwater that falls on the private domain and that which falls on the public domain.
