“Ik had de bom al eerder op de steiger gemonteerd. (+/- 15 kg geperst buskruit in een stalen paddenstoelbom, daarop enkele vuilzakken met houtas). De ontsteker zat midden in het kruit en de kabel liep over de bodem van het meer. Omdat de constructie slechts 2 cm boven het wateroppervlak uitstak, zwom ik erg voorzichtig in richting van het midden van het meer. ( 1 gulp water zou het tuig onklaar maken) Ik voelde de blikken van de toeschouwers in mijn nek en dacht even na wat er zou gebeuren indien de bom vroegtijdig af zou gaan… Waarschijnlijk zou mijn verkoolde lijk 10 tallen meters in de lucht worden geslingerd. Als er van een lijk nog veel sprake zou zijn… Ik genoot nog even van de spanning en de stilte en zwom vervolgens naar de oever. Zonder al te veel aankondiging telde ik af op 3-2-0 en Bang!! Wat een knal… Een doffe dreun mooi en vol. Geen felle klap als een pistool schot… Mooie wolk ook… niet echt een paddenstoel wel…”

“Niet veel later stonden de fl***en er al met enkele combi’s en een reeks kwade buurtbewoners. (Die blijkbaar op de vuist wouden gaan = overdreven!) Bon, het was aan de luide kant. Ik trok het me niet veel aan (probeerde) en dronk glaasje champagne in de tuin…

The title of the exhibition, Flagada, means both “flattened” and “not feeling well.” De Witte doesn’t use this term in reference to something collapsing but to signify anything on the brink of change. The exhibition illustrates the search for something on the verge of happening, though we don’t yet know what.

“Pauwaert reintroduces the cultural-historical phenomenon of the Joyous Entry, which has fallen into oblivion in past centuries. These processions, specific to our region since the Middle Ages, were ceremonial festivities celebrating the arrival of ruling monarchs to a city. Pauwaert’s parade, which marches through the inner city of Ghent, pays tribute to the collective excitement generated by the Entries. It also pays tribute to a tradition that was not only political, but also culturally important: the very best artists, architects, musicians and actors were called in to liven up the march and decorate the festivities. Pauwaert breathes new life into the practice of the entry as a moment for artistic expression...”

“Pauwaert creates a grand event in which an arsenal of meanings is compressed. Following the end of the procession, these meanings unfold into autonomous moments, into sculptural relics that are exhibited in the gallery spaces. Here, different layers of meaning that are found in the Entry are further dissected and
explored. Thus, Pauwaert’s three-year quest for the perfect mushroom cloud symbolises the sometimes bitter union of beauty and destruction, of sublime power and human suffering. Pauwaert’s multimedial work invites deep reflection on the visual and emotional impact of apocalyptic imagery.”

‘The End Is Near’ by Joost Pauwaert opens Saturday 26 October 2024 accompanied by a performance in the historic city center.

The Apocalyptic Triumph Procession starts at 16.00 at Sint-Baafsplein in Gent and will follow the route through the historic city center to the gallery arriving around 16.30.

After the procession, all the sculptures become part of the exhibition in the gallery spaces, continuing their symbolic journey from the streets to the exhibition space. For this occasion, the Penitentenstraat and Edward Anseeleplein will be carfree.

Vanderschoot shows recurring motifs, such as a panoply of sculptural wall pieces depicting gloves that gesticulate with ex-voto like hand signs. Swiss army knives mark am and pm, a myriad of glyphs, graphemes and motifs adorn the surfaces of Vanderschoot’s sculptures, as if they had swarmed through the exhibition and taken up residence at will.

One of the most illuminating aspects of her work, however, is the peculiar prospect of exquisite productivity it offers. Cocoon, a self-portrait, shows a pair of overalls. They appear to be buffeted by the wind like a scarecrow, something familiar twisted into the uncanny. It stands erect, floating on the shapes of an absent figure, as if carried by an invisible person, winking at classical Greek sculpture.

The juxtaposition and interpenetration of consumer culture, cartoons, popular and medieval culture appears as a central motif, behind which lies the question of how to deal artistically with patterns that are reproduced in one’s own values and imagination. The uniformity of the materials (acrylic resin, oil and enamel paint) and manufacturing processes (casting) that Vanderschoot uses to transform each form or object into her own sculpture has often been noted.

‘s sculpture exemplifies a work that evolves over time, shaped by the accumulation of small, uncontrollable errors and actions, resulting in a remarkable outcome. The traces of these repeated gestures remain visible, bearing witness to the process. Each daily addition allows the paint to chart its own path, which in turn guides the direction of subsequent layers, ultimately merging into an organic whole. This process perfectly aligns with the spirit of the exhibition’s title, ‘Perlado.’

‘Le Palais Idéal’ is an ode to the now-historical monument in France that was single-handedly built by a postman in the 19th century. Alice Vanderschoot reflects on the use and circulation of visual communication in current times. She questions the authenticity, meaning, and origin of everyday objects coming from her personal environment such as work gloves and pocket knives .

Alice Vanderschoot researches lost visual languages and symbols, disappeared customs and rituals such as votives that play an important role in her oeuvre.

In addition to the artist’s characteristic paintings, where she evokes imaginary landscapes or the winding paths of mist, the exhibition will feature a new neon installation and sculptures reflecting on her childhood in Roeselare.

Johannes Wald ‘drawings, words and

Johannes Wald (DE, 1980) wrote his drawings, words, and errant thoughts in a notebook from July 2019 until April 2020. By galvanizing this notebook the artist created a copper object in which all his notes are still present, thus becoming a work that forms part of his oeuvre.
