How can we reduce unjustified radiation exposure and increase patient safety? One way is to decrease your repeated CT scans.
Although repeat-reject analysis is recommended by for radiography, and by for mammography, typical effective dose from CT exams is hundreds of times higher than that of radiography and tens of times higher than that of mammography exams. A study performed by Harvard and Dartmouth Medical Schools found a repeat rate of 41% in abdominal imaging, the vast majority of which was CT. A recalled abdomen and pelvis exam without contrast material will have a DLP of 1004 mGy.cm according to the DRL, corresponding to a size-specific dose estimate of 19 mGy and an effective dose of 15 mSv.
