Romans 8 tells us over and over again how great it is that God's children have the Holy Spirit living in them. We know we will be raised from the dead because we have the Spirit in us. We can be sure of our resurrection because the same Spirit that gave Jesus life and brought him back from the dead is in us. We are not going to die. The power of the Holy Spirit to give life is stronger than death. We'll make it! Even though our bodies will die, the Spirit of God keeps us alive, gives us hope, and gives us the power to win.
Holy Father, thank you very much for the gift of the Holy Spirit. To know that the power of the same Spirit who helped create the cosmos and who resurrected Jesus from the grave still resides in me takes my breath away with astonishment and awe. Few things are more beautiful than knowing that Jesus thought to pray for us on the night he was betrayed! We typically read and examine the words of John 17 as a prayer for his apostles in the upper room. However, if we examine attentively at this verse, we can see that Jesus prays for us, those who believe in him as a result of the apostles' witness. He wishes for us to be one! He desires that we live with the same unity, purpose, and character as God. If we don't, how will the rest of the world know that God sent his Son? How will they know which stories to believe? How will people come to know Jesus as their Savior?

Baptism is about much more than getting wet or crossing off another thing on our list of things to do to show obedience. You see, what saves us is that Jesus died, was buried, and rose from the dead (1 Cor. 15:1-5). God has given us the amazing grace (Rom. 6:1,14,15) of being able to share in Jesus' saving work through faith and experience it in baptism (Gal. 3:26-27). We stop living the way we used to and bury it in the past. It doesn't hold us anymore. This death is the most important one. Our new life is now joined with Christ's, and his future is now our own (cf. Col. 3:1-4). God made us so that we can praise him and spend eternity with him. That means that the Gospel is not just something that is preached; it is something that we experience by God's grace.
Thank you, Father, for bringing me back to life and giving me a new life in Jesus. Thank you for being kind enough to send Jesus. Thank you for giving me the chance to know what it was like for Jesus to die, be buried, and rise again. May my life show the powerful grace you've given me. In Jesus' precious name I pray. Amen.

This is just another way to say, "Love your neighbor as yourself!" Jesus came to carry our problems and take away the shame and pain that come from our sin. Read Isaiah 53 for a powerful description of God's Suffering Servant. This passage is often used to talk about Jesus. Now, he wants us to live in ways that are good and helpful to those around us. We are called to do more than just pray or ask what we can do to help. We are to serve, minister, and help those who are struggling.

Grace doesn't make us careless about sin. When we gave our lives over to Christ as Lord, we stopped being sinful. We don't want sin or its power to be in charge of our lives. We don't want to forget how much Jesus had to suffer to pay for our sins. Paul says things as strongly as he can ("By no means!" is a much too mild translation: "God forbid!" "Impossible to imagine!" or "Horrible!" would be much better.) As people who have been saved by God's grace, we know that sin is more than just breaking a rule. Sin is putting Jesus' love for us in a bad light by choosing our sin over what he did for us. Sin is turning your back on the Father, who paid so much to bring you into his family. Sin hurts our Father because it shows that we love sin more than we love him. Lastly, sin is when we choose to do what we want instead of what God wants. This choice leads to self-destruction.

Father, I want to thank you for Jesus' death on the cross and the salvation I have received because of it. You have shown me an incredible amount of grace. Please make me dislike my own sin. Give me a strong desire to be holy and a better understanding of how much it cost you to make me holy. In Jesus' precious name I pray. Amen.

It's one thing to talk about being filled with the Spirit, but it's a whole other thing to let the Spirit run our lives and tell us what to do. Paul is telling us that we need to do more than just talk about what we believe. The Holy Spirit must help us make decisions, decide what is right and wrong, and control what we say. His fruit must be seen: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, loyalty, and self-control. Paul tells Christians who have the Holy Spirit: "Act like it!"Holy God, thank you for giving me life through your Spirit. God is always there. He can do anything he wants. He has an infinite amount of strength. He never gets tired of blessing people and giving them his grace. Most important, he wants to show us every day how powerful and kind he is.
Almighty and eternal God, you are kind and merciful. Thank you for giving me strength when I was tired, guidance when I was confused, and hope when I was feeling hopeless. Please give me the strength to do what you want me to do and trust in your presence through the Holy Spirit. In Jesus' precious name I pray. Amen.

Paul might be about to die. But he knows that his life and future are safe in the hands of the Lord. The Holy Spirit will give him the strength he needs to be what he needs to be when he is persecuted and going through hard times. The Spirit will also work to save him. Either he will be saved from prison and death so that he can help other people, or he will be saved to be with the Lord he loves. In either case, he waits and hopes for rescue!
O LORD, God Almighty, please give me the strength to always believe that you will save me. Also, dear Father, some of my dearest friends are fighting for their lives because of health problems. Please save them, whether it's through your healing that makes them healthy again or through your grace that makes sure their future is with you and your victorious Son. Thank you for all of your many blessings and gifts, but most of all, I want to thank you for giving us access to you even though we don't deserve to be here. Your loving mercy has brought us here. Please give me the strength I need to resist temptation and the wisdom I need to see evil for what it is. Please give me the strength I need to stay away from evil and its effects. How are we saved? What Jesus did for us on behalf of God! Let's promise that nothing will make us stop trusting and depending on that hope, that Gospel that saved us. We can't be saved by any other name, any other Gospel, or any other message. (cf. Acts 4:12; Galatians 1:3–9; Colossians 2:16–16) There's nothing else we need to add. No one should ever be able to take anything from it. Let's keep this faith, this trust, in God's grace that Jesus has given us!
