Southside Neighborhood Pharmacy updated their business hours.

Many women come in to the pharmacy complaining of va**nal discomfort. For some it's a touchy subject and they are embarrassed and for others it's no big deal. What do both groups have in common??? Well they just want to be treated... FAST.

Because there are patients who may be unable to clearly describe what they are experiencing, we have prepared a few pointers to help you explain your situation.

First, tell your healthcare provider why the symptoms are uncomfortable. Is it burning or itching? Are you experiencing a discharge? If so does it have a scent? What's the texture like?

By providing this information the pharmacist is able to figure out what is causing your issue. How would they know? Because some symptoms are specific to a particular infection.

For instance the difference between a yeast infection and bacteria vaginosis are as follows:

• Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of fungus whereas bacterial vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria.

• Yeast infections result in a curdy white odorless discharge however bacterial vaginosis associated with a grey discharge that has a fishy odor.

• Yeast infections can also cause swelling and itching of the va**na. This symptom does not occur with bacterial vaginosis.

These points are important because there are some va**nal issues that can be treated with over the counter medications (ie yeast infections) and others that require a prescription from your doctor (ie bacterial vaginosis). If you know the difference you'll know whether you can just come to the pharmacy for a reccomendation or if you need to head straight to your doctor.

Lately we've been getting alot of questions related to feminine health and hygiene so this weeks Wellness Wednesday focus is to provide you with a few facts about this sensitive area.

#1- A healthy va**nal pH is between 3.8 and 4.5.

#2- Vaginal flora helps to protect women from reproductive infections (for instance yeast infections).

#3- Lactobacillus, a good bacteria, has been clinically proven to support va**nal health.

#4 Vaginal discharge is normal however changes in discharge or a discharge associated with an unfamiliar scent is not.

Vaginal health is important because when the natural environment is disrupted unhealthy organisms will flourish and infections will occur.
