Our member ACT-SA has produced a lessons learnt report following the Gold Mafia scandal. Some highlights include:
1. The invaluable role of the media in exposing corruption.
2. There is an increasing trend to use gold as the preferred currency for money launderers since the process of melting, refining and stamping obfuscates all traces of its origin.
3. Smugglers use government institutions, individuals and diplomatic immunity and privilege to facilitate the movement of dirty money and gold.
4. Licenses and permits do not guarantee that there is a legitimate business undertaking on the go. Syndicates bribe banks and other regulators to move dirty money and gold.

To report the report in full, please e-mail us on [email protected]

Basel Institute on Governance - Peru Institute on Governance does an amazing work in mentoring on collectively addressing corruption.
The first cohort of mentees had the chance to come together on the sidelines of the 2022 international Collective Action conference to present and exchange their Collective Action concepts and initiatives, receiving valuable feedback and the opportunity also to share difficulties and hurdles they are experiencing.
