Botswana’s AFCON 2027 Bid Successfully Delivered to AFCON
On Tuesday 23rd May 2023, Botswana successfully submitted her bid with respect to the 36th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Delivered both by hand and through email, in addition to another hard copy being sent via courier, the bid book officially cemented Botswana’s commitment to securing the rights to the 36th AFCON that will be held in 2027.
The bid book sells the Botswana story; from her history through her current status, to her future ambitions; most significantly, demonstrating the country’s wherewithal to deliver a mega event of the AFCON.
CAF is expected to confirm within the next few days, names of countries that have successfully lodged bid books with them. Pursuant to that they will amongst other things carry out an inspection of facilities ahead of the Executive Board pronouncing the winning bid.
“For us, submission of the bid book is the greatest milestone we have achieved to date. We did not just submit a bid book, but a very compelling one that should land Botswana the rights to the prestigious AFCON competition in 2027. Chairman of the Bid Committee Mr Ashford Mamelodi said’’.
Having submitted the bid book, the next big assignment of the Bid Committee is to lobby the approximately twenty-two (22) members of the CAF Executive Board with whom the decision of the host nation lies.
It is expected that CAF will announce the winner before the end of September 2023, giving the successful bidder just under 4 years to prepare for the continental showpiece.
For their part the, Honourable Minister of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture Mr Tumiso Rakgare stated that AFCON 2027 will be a serious catalyst for Botswana’s development.
“Preparing for the competition will result in an infrastructural boom and in the process create thousands of temporary and permanent jobs. As we aspire to become a high income economy by 2036, there are not many better catalysts towards that than staging competitions such as the AFCON’’.
Mfolo Mfolo, CEO of the Botswana Football Association stated they are excited at the prospects of hosting the AFCON. ‘The football landscape in Botswana would never be the same. Not only will we have better facilities but a lot of young people will be inspired to pay is the sport of football’’.
The Botswana bid book was delivered through the Botswana Football Association.

Propellers Swimming Club recently hosted 5x African Champion Clayton Jimmie in Botswana.

▪ Propellers Swimming club in preparation for Botswana Swimming Sport Association (BSSA) Swimming Nationals host 5x African Champion, Clayton Jimmie to train a swimming clinic in Gaborone.

Propellers Swimming Club, had the pleasure to host the 5x African Swimming Champion, Clayton Jimmie for a swim clinic, at Showcase and Molapo Jacks Gym (the official Propellers Swimming club pool) on the 28th of January 2023. The exciting clinic served to bring a world class professional swimmer to Botswana, to teach and inspire our swimmers. The oversubscribed clinic, had many children and parents in attendance, in great anticipation at meeting a current African champion right at their door step.

As Propellers Swimming club, our intention is to inspire our swimmers to ultimately perform at high world standards. We invited this International and African swimming giant, Mr Jimmie to deliver a day swim clinic to teach Propellers Swimming Club and Academy youth swimmers.

The swim clinic was held in two parts, starting the morning at Molapo Showcase, with an astounding motivational speech (were the children got to understand what it takes to be a world class swimmer), followed by an interactive session and then closed off with a Q&A session. The children were totally engaged, in awe and took in so much information. After lunch and refreshments, it was time to put into practice what the kids had heard and learnt from the theory session. As our club saying goes, “It’s time to switch on your Propellers!” Mr Jimmie coached the children in their age groups and team squads and the superb day ended off with a race against the world champ himself! Needless to say, the swimmers, parents and supporters had a remarkable day.

Clayton Jimmie is a South African powerhouse professional swimmer, and a 5 time African Champion. He is also pursuing the 2024 Paris Olympics A Times. When asked what his mission to Botswana was, he said, “My mission is to educate and inspire the youth, encourage them to be swimmers, and also to help them understand that there is a world of opportunities available through swimming. He also stressed the importance of not only focusing on performance and winning, but that it was equally important to have fun and love the sport.”

Propellers Swimming Club partnered with Clayton Jimmie as part of their program to get their swimmers prepared and ready for the Botswana Swimming Nationals, to be held on 23rd – 26th February 2023 at The UB swimming pool. The club hopes to continue to be a strong contributor and player to Botswana swimming and sports at large within our community.
