We are thrilled to announce the tremendous success of our 4-day Public Awareness Campaign and Community Engagement initiative in Maun! ๐ A heartfelt thank you to Maun and all the incredible stakeholders who played a crucial role in making this event a triumph! ๐
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a pressing issue, especially affecting women, and Botswana has faced alarming statistics. In response, BCPI, in collaboration with Youth Empowered Botswana, organized a transformative event focused on addressing corruption and GBV. Our mission was to foster discussions, seek solutions, and raise awareness on critical issues such as Sextortion and Trafficking.
Together, we are building a movement of Integrity Champions! ๐
๐
Dates: 4th-7th December 2023
During these four days, participants had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, learn, and provide input on the challenges we face. The annual "Integrity Walk" and the captivating "I Say No To GBV Art Competition Exhibition" were seamlessly incorporated into the event's activities, adding a creative and powerful touch to our mission. ๐จ๐ช
We believe that through education, awareness, and community involvement, we can effect positive change. Let's continue to stand together against corruption and GBV, creating a society that prioritizes integrity, equality, and safety for all. ๐ค๐

has come and gone! The discussions around different elements of ethics in business were especially eye opening. BCPI participated in a panel that focused on specifically the public sector and how integrity therein can be encouraged by preventing corruption. For the case of Botswana, the panel agreed that Botswanaโs legislative framework needs work, specifically the amendment of existing laws to make them more effective and preventive of corruption, as was intended in their creation. The panel also emphasized the need for the private sector to be concerned about corruption in the public sector, because of the instances where the two interact especially in public procurement, where corruption is rife. Thank you to all who participated and especially the organizers ABECAfrica!

The constitution provides for an independent and accountable DPP Office separate from the Attorney Generalโ office which previously bore the responsibility of the prosecution of criminal cases.
In the past, prosecutorial responsibility being held by the Attorney Generalโs office was quite a contested issue since it gave government power and control over the prosecution process; this could potentially result in cases being pursued for political reasons rather than for the pursuit of justice.
The establishment of the DPP was therefore seen as an important step in ensuring the independence of the prosecution process and in upholding the rule of law in Botswana. The DPP is now responsible for prosecuting criminal cases on behalf of the government, and operates independently of both the government and the judiciary.

Are you voting in the next elections? Will you be a candidate?
A study conducted by the Democracy Research Project shows that voter apathy is prevalent in Botswana. Some of the identified factors contributing to voter apathy included: lack of knowledge about the political parties that contest elections; lack of interest in partisan politics; lack of recall mechanism; absence of credible and ethical political candidates and lack of responsiveness by government.
We bring you a conversation with BOSA to look at some of these issues and also for Bosa to share their unique approach to community leadership: โcitizen-led political leadershipโ โ where they seek out and elevate community leaders, civil society activists, and business leaders to be active in politics.
We will be joined by BOSA Leader Mmusi Maimane and the Executive Director of Labour Policy Experts Botswana Mr. Keaoleboga Dipogiso in a session hosted by Mr. Donald Badisa Seberane and Rev. Tuduetso Lefenya.

A CALL FOR DISS TO ADHERE TO THE RULE OF LAW
The UPR NGO Working Group, comprising the Botswana Council of Non-Governmental Organisations (BOCONGO), DITSHWANELO โ The Botswana Centre for Human Rights, Letloa Trust, Le****ns, G**s and Bisexuals of Botswana (LeGaBiBo), Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Botswana, and Rainbow Identity Association (RIA), is concerned by the continued arrest of persons by the Directorate on Intelligence and Security services (DISS), without adherence to due process of law.
The latest incident, in which an editor and senior reporter, Mr Ryder Gabathuse and Mr Innocent Selatlhwa respectively, were detained, has sent shock waves within human rights circles.
We note that the DISS has since reportedly said that their actions are regrettable, according to a joint statement by MISA Botswana and the Editors Forum (22 July 2023). We however call for public commitment from DISS and other law enforcement officers that they will act in accordance with the rule of law and respect the human rights of all persons, regardless of their perception of the innocence or guilt of those they may arrest.
Freedom of expression and by extension, freedom of the media, are guaranteed by article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and by section 12 of our Constitution of Botswana. It would be remiss of us if we were to tolerate our country plummeting to join states which do not respect human rights and the rule of law.
Harassment of journalists has a chilling effect on the society because it shows that anyone could become the next victim of harassment by our security agencies. The nation must jealously guard its civil rights and freedoms because if left unchecked, impunity will reign and no one will be immune from victimisation and violation of their civil and political rights. As Lutheran pastor Martin Niemoller (1892-1984) suggested, if you do not speak up for others when their rights are being violated, when your turn comes, there will be nobody left to speak up for you.
The UPR NGO Working Group, together with other human rights defenders, condemns the recent arrests and calls upon those responsible to be held accountable. The government and the DISS must also assure us that this will never happen again.
As a member of both the African Union and United Nations (UN) community of states, through regular reporting to African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights and to the UN mechanisms, it is important that we remember that violations of human rights and disregard of the rule of law will be noted. This includes through the Universal Periodic Review process of the UN Human Rights Council. This does not speak well of the image of our country.
We call for law enforcement officers to ensure that they conduct their work with due diligence to avoid the violation of human rights of all persons, regardless of their socio-economic and political status. We reiterate the right to equal protection before the law and the right to dignity of all persons .
We urge the government to continue to uphold the principles of human rights in our constitution, and in the regional and international human rights instruments to which we have committed ourselves, by ensuring that the DISS does not violate human rights.
We call for us all to remember our core value of botho. It should be the measure against which we plan and judge our actions โ both government and citizens.
