October is Women’s History Month in Canada, a time to celebrate the women and girls from our past, and our present, who are contributing to a better, more inclusive Canada.
We are stronger together! 💪
If you have POP, you’re not alone! Pelvic Floor Prolapse (POP) affects 1 in 4 women in their 40s and 1 in 3 in their 60s. By the time women reach their 80s, POP affects half of all women.
The pelvic floor muscles play a key role in supporting our bladder, uterus and re**um.
Prolapse literally means ‘to fall’. POP happens when one or more pelvic organs (the va**na, uterus, bladder, urethra, small intestine, and re**um) drop from their normal position due to weakening or stretching.
The pelvic floor muscles may become weakened for many reasons: pregnancy and childbirth, aging, hormones, heavy lifting, chronic straining, surgery or injury.
Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy strengthens the muscles that support the involved organs and helps restore normal mobility and function to the pelvic floor. Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is effective at reducing POP symptoms and should be the first line of treatment for women with urinary incontinence and POP (Bo & Hilde 2013, Dumoulin & Hay-Smith 2010)!
You can book an in-clinic Physiotherapy appointment with Women’s Health Physiotherapy Centre at either our Ajax or Whitby, Ontario locations at www.womenshealthphysio.ca. You can also call, email or DM us with all/any of your POP related questions! 🫶🏼
Did you know???
⚡️92% of women who leak urine at 12 weeks postpartum will still be leaking five years later? (Viktrup & Lose 2000)
⚡️There are birthing positions that can slow down or speed up labour?
⚡️50% of all women who deliver a child will develop pelvic organ prolapse? (Hagen and Stark 2011)
⚡️There are steps you can take to decrease the possibility of trauma / tears to the pelvic floor during delivery?
When symptoms like incontinence, pelvic pain, low back pain or pelvic organ prolapse appear during pregnancy or even after giving birth, most women think and are sometimes even told it is normal and part of being a new mom. FALSE! These symptoms are signs of pelvic floor dysfunction and not something you just need to live with.
We can help! 🫶🏼
