It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Kay Cousineau on November 13. Kay was known and loved by many members since she joined in 1977. She was president of the Guild from 1978 to 1980. Kay had recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

April 29, 2023, BHCG Rug Exhibition

Saturday, April 29 was a grand day for our Beaconsfield Guild!

Finally returning from the pandemic to more normal times, it had been five and a half years since we held a rug exhibition. It was high time indeed to have one again! Despite our Rug Exhibition being only a one-day show, we estimate that we had 150 visitors, if not 200! We were delighted to greet visitors from numerous rug-hooking groups, some travelling for as long as a 2-hour drive. Many visitors had received invitations or heard of the show through Facebook. Others read about it in the Beaconsfield Spring contact magazine, noticed the Beaconsfield electronic billboards, saw our little display in the library advertising our event, or simply saw the signs on Beaconsfield Boulevard. Many were also our own friends and family.

We exhibited about 120 rugs, displayed over five different theme rooms and the two hallways. From Canadiana and Landscapes on the main floor to Art, Florals and Animals, and Home Sweet Home upstairs, the variety was a delight to see. The many favorable comments and words of congratulations from the public made us all very proud!

Fête nationale 2023

In Beaconsfield, the Fête nationale is usually celebrated outdoors in Centennial Park. Despite a long stretch of beautiful sunny weather, June 24th happened on a rainy day, so festivities were moved inside to the Beaconsfield Recreation Centre. Attendance was certainly not dampened! The centre was packed with a steady stream of visitors throughout the afternoon and the city provided live music and mime entertainment.

Our booth was set up beside the Quilters’ and Artists’ booths. To the other side was the live reptiles and small mammals exhibition! While the children were thrilled to hold the snakes, we were drawn to the adorable little hedgehog which periodically came out of hiding.

Several visitors stopped to sit at our booth and try rug hooking. One visitor signed up for a beginners’ class and another signed up to join our guild in September!

Many thanks to our members who participated. Not only was it a fun way to have a hook-in and meet the public, but our participation is also a good way to give back to the city for the fabulous support which they provide us throughout the year.

Thank you to our families … and all the attending supporters today for cheering us all on. What a fantastic day!!!

What a wonderful time at our annual picnic last Saturday!! A big thanks goes out to all who attended and helped make the day so much fun. And another big thank you to all the BHCG members who lent a hand and worked so hard to make sure everything came together beautifully.
Here are a few photos, more to follow.

Our exhibition was a huge success! Here is a video of the highlight of our day, the mayor of Beaconsfield unveiling of a rug depicting our beautiful Centennial Hall where we meet each Monday. The rug was created by a large group of our members, each hooking a small square. The squares were then sewn together to form one amazing large rug.

Happy Valentine's Day!
We had a great turnout for our second general meeting of the year, with special emphasis on our 2023 rug exhibition planning details. To create some fun, we continued our tradition of wearing red for Valentine’s Day. Several members brought door prizes and we were treated to Helen’s delicious home-baked cookies!

Hello Friends,
Me, Juliet again!

On August 11th I will be participating in the Défi inclusACTIF for the Adapted Sports Foundation.
This is the organization that runs the adapted ski program in the winter and various water sports in the summer. I had a fun skiing season a few years ago and a water ski outing a couple of years ago. This year I’ll be having an adapted kayaking session.

The Défi is to raise funds to buy more equipment for the sports.
I am a paraplegic and my Défi is to swim nonstop for at least an hour and a half. I usually swim for 45 minutes. I would like to swim 60 laps which is one and a half kilometres. The trouble is I lose count as I’m swimming!

No pressure on anyone but if you’d like to contribute please use these links:

The city of Beaonsfield treats our guild so well and we are always happy to give back to the community whenever we can. It was a wonderful day and thanks to all who came out to lend a hand!

SPECIAL SHOW & TELL : EASTER

Kitt Richard
Bunny
Original
2018
#6 cut
Rug 20.5” x 11.5”
Framed 28.5” x 19.5”

I made this rug for my daughter, whose nickname is Bunny. I hooked it with #6 wool strips and used a thick wool for the tail, which I carved. I added a button for the bunny’s eye. My husband made the frame from barnwood.

Show & Tell: New Year's Resolutions_ #2: Enjoy nature!

Lois J. Morris
My Butterfly Garden
Original
1997
#3 and #4 cuts on rug warp
26.5 in x 35 in

There are so many beautiful things in the natural world around us. As I was watching a butterfly in the garden, I was inspired to combine them together into this whimsical rug design.

This piece was showcased in Rug Hooking Magazine vol. XXVI – No 4, January-February 2015.

Show & Tell: New Year's Resolutions_ #2: Enjoy nature!

Maureen Rowe
Roses
Designed by Lois J Morris
2010
Wool cuts #3 and #4
15-inch diameter
Crocheted edging

I did this rug while doing a course on shading at Beaconsfield with Lois J Morris. It was her design and her wool. It was interesting to learn the values of shading and how the values work side by side. To see a real difference, you have to skip one value, but otherwise from one value to the next, the change is much more subtle.

Show & Tell: New Year's Resolutions_ #2: Enjoy nature!

Claire Fradette
Floral Banner
Designer unknown
2009
Variety of cuts
18 in x 30 in

I bought the pattern for only $2 at an OHCG annual in Ottawa.

I hooked it with leftover worms cut in various widths. The background is done in higgledy piggledy style using off-white Dorr wool cut to #6 width.

This rug was first a table runner. Then, I used it on top of a dresser for a while. Today, it is a floor rug.

Home Sweet Home
Original
Punch needle
2014
8 in x 21.5 in
Whipped border

This was my first try at punch hooking when I took a mini workshop on Punch Needle Hooking with Dawna Matthew given on a Saturday. I used yarns which I had available and needed a few band-aids!

Show & Tell: New Year's Resolutions_ #2: Enjoy nature!

Lois J. Morris
Flower Baskets
Design based on a quilting pattern
2013
#3 and #4 cuts on linen
42 in x 30 in

My quilting friends were making a quilt to raise money and I contributed to the project by making a companion rug. The flower baskets are hooked with recycled wool plaid, some as-is and some over-dyed. I dyed the background wool to match the quilt background fabric. Our projects were raffled off with the proceeds going to scholarships for local students.

This piece was showcased in Rug Hooking Magazine vol. XXVII – No 3, November-December 2015.

SHOW&TELL / NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS
#2: Enjoy nature!

Winter has ended, and spring has sprung. What better time to enjoy nature’s splendour bursting forth! Connecting with nature improves our mood and nurtures happiness and well-being. Whether a walk in the park, caring for a houseplant, or planting a butterfly garden, you can also capture some of that happiness by hooking a flower or a ladybug into a rug. Happy Spring everyone!
