How can these two people have the same disability?

They may both have an invisible disability.

An invisible disability is a disability that is not outwardly visible.

For all the progress that society has made in regard to disabilities, we still have a long way to go when it comes to invisible disability discrimination.

This Invisible Disabilities Awareness Week is the perfect time to reflect on our own unconscious biases and to spread awareness, so don't forget to share this post!

We 💙 our OTAs!

Occupational Therapy Assistants are always on the front lines, consistently involved in direct client care.

OTAs don’t just help individuals physically; they are also instrumental in helping them re-establish their confidence and independence.

By teaching them how to use assistive devices or adapt to their environments, OTAs empower their clients to lead more independent lives.

From implementing therapy plans to offering emotional support, assisting in daily activities and providing important insights about clients' progress, OTAs wear many hats.

Thank you to all our OTAs for all that you do!

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common childhood physical disability, often affecting posture, sensory perceptions, communication and movement.

CP affects every child differently, so while motor control is a primary symptom, some children may experience additional challenges like intellectual disability, while some may not.

That's why it's important to avoid automatically underestimating an individual with CP's (or any disability) intelligence!

"Canada means 'village', but for far too long, there have been two villages in Canada:

The one for the original peoples that have experienced oppression and discrimination, and one for everyone else."

In the next 150 years, Dr. Cindy Blackstock, a member of the Gitxsan First Nation and Executive Director of , envisions a better Canada:

"A Canada with a generation of First Nations, Métis and Inuit children that do not have to recover from their childhood; who can be proud of who they are; that have all of their rights recognized; and a generation of non-Indigenous kids who never have to say they are sorry."

As Duchenne Awareness Month comes to a close, we also say farewell and best of luck to this very special client.

Last week was his last day with the ErinoakKids Neuromuscular team, as he is transitioning to adult services.

We have been honoured to work along side of him and his family through the many milestones and some challenging moments. Despite some setbacks along the way, he has always maintained a positive outlook and succeeded in academics and other areas.

His shoe collection never ceases to amaze us and his sense of humour and smile always brightened our day. We wish him all the best and look forward to what he accomplishes next.

For children with disabilities, representation is crucial.

When children with disabilities see themselves represented, it confirms that they belong, and their dreams and ambitions are to be celebrated!

This International Week of the Deaf, we’re highlighting our Growing Little Listeners group, where families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing can play and connect with others who are just like them🦻

"Those who endured so much hurt and pain in the residential school system were courageous enough to tell their stories; to give us the gift of reconciliation."

It's only right that we listen, learn and repair.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - Sep 30 - stand with us in your orange shirt at 10 a.m. as we observe a moment of silence across all ErinoakKids sites to acknowledge and reflect on the significance of this day and the legacy of the residential school system.
