Tuesday is traditionally harvest day at the farm. Between rain showers we had quite a few volunteers and some great young people helping us out. Freshly picked herbs and a small assortment of veg to the Burlington Food bank.
Thank you to all our volunteers! Have an amazing week!

Young people are our future leaders and changemakers.
This week a small group of 31st Burlington Beaver Scouts made a visit to find out what is happening at this urban farm, learn about volunteer service and their community. They enthusiastically helped to plant many seeds and 50 small seedlings we had on stand by. They also made some much needed non-persishable food donations to Burlington Food Bank.
Thank you for all your help Beavers and Scouters!

How does your garden grow?
We hope that despite the wacky wet weather, increase in rodents and bugs and extreme swings in temperature, you are able to enjoy and have success in your gardens.
After weeks of groundhogs eating our leafy greens including cabbages, earwigs, slugs, vine borers and powdery mildew attacking squash and pepper plants, blossom end rot on our first tomatoes and a lack of pollinators when it rains, we have captured some good signs in the farm! Let’s meet these challenges, learn from them and continue to grow!!!

07/11/2024

While we continue to grow fresh produce for the Burlington Food Bank, you can help too.
Food supports run low on inventory every summer due to less active food drives and natural calendar “holidays” that generate an outpouring of community generousity such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.
Food insecurity and hunger doesnt have a season, for so many, it is an everyday challenge. If you are able, please check in with a local charity near you and find out what you can do to assist. Thank you!

Terrific-ly hot Tuesday!!
Quite a few volunteers popping into the farm over the past few days to help encourage our plants along.
Some returning volunteers and new faces this season, Sanja, Joanna, Spencer and Nick! We are so thankful for your gift of time, energy, knowledge and hard work!
Our tomato plants and a few squash and zucchini plants are starting to take off with the hot weather!

A beautiful Saturday in July!
Nishreen and Bernie are regulars at the farm, doing whatever is needed to help out and keep things going. Nishreen also volunteered to help with communications and administrative support this year and is an energetic “hands on” worker at the farm.
Bernie is also a returning volunteer, sharing his experience and knowledge, looking after planting, watering and plant care.
Thank you for joining us at the farm!
Have an amazing weekend!

Looking forward to the return of our summer volunteers!
Now that school is out we welcomed back Kristen and Xavier today!
We were able to get loads of work done this morning. Thank you!!
Grass cutting and w**ding, along with some seeding. Since we can “farm” until the snow flies, we take advantage of the extended season and continuously add to the plantings.
It’s never too late!
Have an amazing day and enjoy the outdoors and sunshine!

Our urban farm is so lucky to have volunteers with diverse passion, skills and experiences.
Joel is a super grower and starts his veg seeds early in the season. He donates his time, energy and vegetable plants to help feed our community. Last year he built a tomato tunnel and this year has expanded his efforts.
What an amazing space!! Lets grow!
These will be harvested throughout the season and donated to Burlington Food bank.
Be like Joel and grow vegetables for your’s ( or a neighbour’s table). 🙂
Thanks Joel!
Happy Canada Day everyone!

A special delivery today from Melissa and her wonderful helpers.
For the past few years the kindys at Rattlesnake Point Public School have been learning about seeds, plants and growing food, then donating those plants to the farm that will help feed families who need fresh, healthy food. Thank you to all the staff and students who have cared for these seeds and grown them with love for others.
Its never too young to grow!!!

We will have work sessions a couple of mornings and evenings during the week and a couple of hours on the weekend available.

Thank you to this lovely group of hard working volunteers from TD Insurance, and to Scott for connecting with us! So much was accomplished at the farm today. Soil was moved, w**ds were pulled, grass was trimmed, more donated seedlings were planted!
Great shape for the first week in June, can’t wait to see fruits of this labour in July and August!
Food grown at our location is donated to Burlington Food Bank, a key partner distributing food to those who need it.

Thank you to ND students for the special delivery today!
In the past couple of years when we have an abundance of seed donations we encourage students to learn about growing their own food. Many teachers from schools in halton have reached out and recieved seed packets. After enjoying the activity in the classroom, some of those plants come back to the urban farm to be planted out and produce food which is donated to food support programs like Burlington Food bank.
Notre dame high school has a specialty program (SHSM) in horticulture where students learn about landscaping, plants and trees, grafting techniques and what horticulture businesses and careers could be like for them. At the end of the school year there may be plants that are looking for new homes, what better stepping stone than to be planted out to feed families in our community. Thanks to the students who planted and cared for these gifts and the young men who delivered these to our space!
We will have loads of peppers this season!

Photos from Bunchberry Connections's post 06/01/2024

This week, thanks to generous donations and volunteers, over 100 seedlings and plants were added to the farm!
Lets hope the local critters don’t eat them all. They have already snacked on some of our sunflowers but thats ok, we have some more seeds we can start and will work on new strategies to protect our baby plants.

It was feeling like summer out there today! We are always looking to build our volunteer community at the urban farm. At this time of year we are busy w**ding, prepping haybales for planting, planting donated seedlings and seeds, and then of course, watering our thirsty plants!
Sign up on our web site if you are interested in helping out, whether its an occasional hour throughout the summer or a regular time slot, we really appreciate the efforts!
The fabulous end results are donated back to families in the community experiencing food insecurity.
Last year over 2600lbs of locally grown produce and herbs!! Www.Bunchberry.org
There will be volunteers on site Saturday morning 8:30-10:30am. Come see what’s “growing on” in this space!

Fair weather for gardening! Today the Molinaro Group was on the farm! Moving soil, planting seedlings and seeds and removing over grown w**ds to help clean up the space. There is always a lot to do in the garden and this is one amazing space with so much potential. Building partnerships and community, growing produce to help families experiencing food insecurity and creating a safe space to learn about gardening, building good mental and physical health and creating purpose.
Thank you for all your support and the work done today! Many hands make such a big difference, even in one morning! Let’s grow together!

Even with rain- great turn out!

Our collective effort was awesome! Looking forward to the weeks ahead - incredible community and what we can do together

Photos from Bunchberry Connections's post 05/24/2024

One of our goals at the farm is to plant and harvest food to support community members who may be experiencing food insecurity and lack access to fresh local produce. Donations from this space are given to programs and services such as Burlington Food Bank for distribution. Sat May 25th 10am-noon is our first public volunteer work session on site. Always looking to make new connections in the community and meet people who want to make a difference. Check out our page for more info and history. This is our 4th season at this location and we hope to surpass last year’s 2500lbs of home grown goodness.
This project is volunteer managed and rely heavily on the generous gifts of time, energy, knowledge and enthusiasm of the community volunteers as well as donations of supplies, water ($) and tools. Many thanks to all those who have contributed. And a special thank you to those groups and companies who have come to join us for work days and get so much done! We look forward to more community building and growing this season.
Come join us!

Maplehurst public school kindys have been grow-grow-growing! Thanks to Amanda and staff for their leadership and commitment to their students and teaching, they connect to community by donating their efforts to the farm for planting and hope to help feed other kids thru programs such as Burlington food bank. Amazing!!

Volunteers have been busy starting seeds this spring for planting at the farm once all risk of frost has passed. Usually after Victoria day in May.
Hope you are planning and prepping for growing season too!
If you have space or extra plants consider “growing a row” to donate or give away to help those in our community who experience food insecurity.
Produce grown and harvested at the Urban Farm is given back to the community thru programs like Burlington Food Bank and is only possible due to great partnerships, donations, sponsors and volunteers.
Thank you!
