Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation that’s been perpetuated for decades. It’s pervasive, but it’s not inevitable unless we stay silent. The United Nations General Assembly has designated TODAY, November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Violence against women and girls remains the most pervasive human rights violation around the world. Already heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic, its prevalence is now being further increased by the intersecting crises of climate change, global conflict and economic instability.

Against this setting, a backlash against women’s rights is underway around the world. Anti-feminist movements are on the rise, attacks against women human rights defenders and activists are up, and the legal status of women’s rights is increasingly imperilled in many countries. Regressive new laws are exacerbating impunity for perpetrators of domestic violence, governments are using force against femicide and gender-based violence protestors, and women’s rights organizations are being increasingly marginalized.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women will mark the launch of the UNiTE campaign (Nov 25- Dec 10) — an initiative of 16 days of activism concluding on the day that commemorates the International Human Rights Day (10 December).

This campaign, led by the UN Secretary-General and UN Women since 2008, aims to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls around the world, calling for global action to increase awareness, promote advocacy and create opportunities for discussion on challenges and solutions.

“They told me that it was different for everyone and that I should ‘self-explore,’” recalls Frankie. “But how can I when I can’t even undo my own pants?”

The earliest account of pröstitutiön can be found in the list of occupations included in the Sumerian Records, dating back to 2400 BCE. Due to the context of placement in this list, it was associated with temple service work; thus, it was regarded as an acceptable and legitimate profession, a sentiment that was reiterated less than a century later in Babylonia when the legal rights of a pröstitute were recorded in Hammurabi’s Code.

Despite these seemingly promising origins, women employed in this profession began experiencing regulations . In 1075 BCE, The Code of Assura enacted a legal requirement for all women to wear veils in public, with the exception of pröstitutes, who were legally prohibited from doing so.

Pröstitutiön received its first prohibition status in the late 500s when it was criminalized by the Visigoth King of Spain for being incongruent with Catholic values. In accordance with this decree, any women found guilty of prostitution were flogged extensively and exiled, usually the equivalent of a death sentence. In contrast repercussions, the purchase and engagement in sǝx acts was not unlawful and male clients were not penalized.

In the US, pröstitutiön remained federally permissible and was regulated solely by the state until 1910. In 1900, a citizens’ group called The Committee of 15 was established to investigate and lobby against the existence of pröstitutiön and gambling in New York. In their 1902 report, “The Social Evil" the group established their opposition to the regulation of pröstitutiön, proposing instead several alternative solutions to the perceived problem. Some were “improvements to housing, health care, and an increase in women’s wages.”
