The glorious plaque highlighter!

ℹ️ Dark purple = over 3 days old | Pink = new plaque.
- As you can see, dark purple plaque (mature) are present mainly around the margins on the gums and in between the teeth.

Our client states they are brushing and flossing regularly, so how come there are mature plaque in areas where they say they focus the most?

🎯PLAQUE is EXTREMELY STICKY. What does that mean? There's no secret-sauce to it, it's just matter of TIME spent rather than FORCE.

Brushing harder doesn't mean plaque will be removed effectively, if anything - you'll cause more damage than good.

Here are some tips & tricks to effectively remove plaque:
1) Brush slower, gentler at a 45 degree angle - with a SOFT toothbrush or your Electric toothbrush for a minimum of 2 minutes or until your teeth feel SMOOTH and not "grainy"

2) Guide your floss deeper by hugging your tooth, creating a c-shape to get around and under the gums - move UP & DOWN (avoid moving the floss side-to-side)

Medium & Hard toothbrushes are too rough for our precious enamel and gum tissues, especially when the majority of us brush too fast & hard.
It can actually scrub away our enamel causing Abrasion (3rd slide) & loss of gum tissue called Gum Recession (2nd slide).

▫What IS Gum Recession?
Recession of the gums is when your gums pull back and expose your root.

▫What CAUSES Gum Recession?
Many factors such as brushing too hard/fast, brushing incorrectly, periodontal disease, grinding/clenching of the teeth, braces, age and/or genetics.

▫Can my gums heal from Gum Recession?
Once gum recession develops, it's IRREVERSIBLE. We can only slow it down.

▫How can we slow down Gum Recession?
✅ Slow down when you're brushing, you'll know when you're done brushing when your teeth feel SMOOTH [this takes around 3-4 minutes to complete]
✅ Try slow, gentle, small circular motions to brush our smile surface and side-to-side for our biting surfaces
✅ Using a soft or extra soft toothbrush or electric toothbrush
✅ Get an assessment from your dental provider to see if you need a nightguard for your parafunction (grinding/clenching)
✅ Frequent dental hygiene visits to remove toxin-releasing bacteria from the teeth & gums (they harden into stones overtime, causing our gums to become inflamed/recede)

Teeth Abrasion: When our enamel is worn down by a mechanical force such as brushing our teeth aggressively.

We have been talking about halitosis a lot this week - bad breath can make us feel self-conscious when we speak, you're not alone in this! Here are a few tips & tricks to treat bad breath.

▪️Rinse with mouthwash (non-alcohol rinse) a couple of times a week, try not to use it in replacement of brushing

▫️It's vital to visit your dental hygienist frequently to have your teeth and gums in good condition! Minimum of 6 months if you're low risk for periodontal disease, 3-4 months if you're more at risk!

▪️Stay hydrated with water! Your oral tissues need to stay moist. Also try rinsing your mouth with water after consuming tea, coffee & food - it will reduce the food particles to stick around until your next brush.

▫️ Brushing your teeth twice a day & flossing daily helps to keep the plaque levels minimal, leading to less odour-causing bacteria present in the mouth.

▪️Rinse with mouthwash (non-alcohol rinse) couple of times a week, try not to use it in replacement of brushing.

▫️Scrape your tongue daily! Imagine, you just brushed and flossed your teeth to completion and THEN... you feel your teeth with your tongue. You have just spread the food debris & bacteria right back onto your teeth. Remove that debris off your tongue every day for fresher breath.

🔺If you feel like your regular oral hygiene habits aren't enough, you may need a dental cleaning as the build-up of ODOUR-CAUSING bacteria may be present in between your teeth & under your gums. After removing this build-up you'll notice a change in your oral health in a couple of days!

All that bacteria on the tongue is the #1 cause of bad breath. To successfully remove the build-up on the tongue use a tongue scraper! Our favourite tongue scraper: Phillips Tongue Scraper BreathRx.

Halitosis | Also known as "Bad Breath" is one of the most common dental concerns.

So what causes bad breath?

1. Tooth Decay: When our teeth start to rot, it usually doesn't smell pleasant
➡ It's essential to get these addressed by your dental provider if you suspect decay.

2. Diet: Foods such as garlic, onion, fish, dairy, high sugars/starch, alcohol and coffee feeds the bacteria-odour-causing in our mouths, emitting a foul odour.
➡ Rinsing our mouths with water after a meal or drink will help to reduce the smell

3. Tongue problems: Build-up food particles and plaque on the tongue will eventually turn foul
➡ Use a tongue scraper 2x day to remove the particles

4. Tonsil stones: Food particles, debris and plaque build up on the back of our tonsils
➡ Gargle with salt water, frequent use of a tongue scraper, and gently remove the stones with cotton swabs

5. Infrequent flossing: Food & bacteria get trapped in between our teeth, when we don't frequently clean in between our teeth, the food that was trapped there eventually rots releasing a foul smell
➡ Floss more! Use a water flosser, interdental brushes, floss picks and string flosses

6. Infrequent dental visits: When we don't visit our dental provider often, we may be letting undiagnosed diseases such as decay or gum issues progress.
➡ Visit your dental provider 2x a year for a check up!

7. Plaque build up: Plaque consists of bacteria and viruses, when fed by food particles they emit a foul smell & the longer it's left untouched, it's not easily removed by just a toothbrush or floss - your dental hygienist will be best at removing the plaque at this point!
➡ Brush your teeth until the fuzzy feeling goes away! That is the best indicator that plaque has been effectively removed.
