This tasty little treat dropped on our shelves at The Wine Shop last week. Aia Vecchia Vermentino is from the Bolgerhi region along the Tuscan coast.

The wine leans more into vegetal and savoury notes with grass, meyer lemon and a saline finish. As the heat creeps up this week, avoid the stove and instead pair with olives, bread and some salty cheese.

Beauchêne is back! We have fresh stock of the Viognier, Côtes du Rhone Blanc, Rouge, Le Terroir and Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc at The Wine Shop and a small selection available at JWebb at West 85th too.

The Bernard family have tended to the vineyards since 1794 and in 1971, Michel Bernard and his wife Dominique too over the taking over the estate and today their daughters Amandine and Estelle have joined them, making them the 11th generation to work the vineyards.

The estate follows natural wine making techniques, allowing for natural grasses to grow among the vines, installing apiaries onsite and the absence of irrigation and soil tilling to keep as much carbon rich matter in the soil.

As the Bernard family says, “Château Beauchêne is fortunate to be located in a region blessed by the Gods where Sun and Mistral improve the climate and reduce the need for treatment.”

Their winemaking is thoughtful, using their ancient vaulted cellar to help regulate humidity and temperature and neutral oak barrels to enhance each cuvée.

We are lucky to receive small quantities of these wines and so happy to share them with you.

Umbria is such an incredible region for value driven, accessible wine. Ripaie is a winery that employs sustainable, minimal intervention techniques in their production, letting the fruit truly sing.

Their Grechetto is bright and refreshing. Heavy on the citrus with surprising weight and a cleansing acidity. Sangiovese is on the crunchy side with red fruit, hints of savoury herbs and a wicked dose of acidity to play against the firm tannin structure.

After 37 years serving this great city we have decided to close our doors. JWebb has always been more than a place to buy wine. Over the years we have had the pleasure of helping you celebrate milestone birthdays and anniversaries, toasts to New Year’s and other special events. We have been present at your family gatherings and dinner tables. Being able to help choose the wines for these events has meant the world to us.

When we opened the shop nearly 40 years ago, we had no idea the impact it would have on the wine scene in Calgary. Being a female owned, independent wine shop meant breaking down walls that had never been moved before. Since those first challenging days we have had the pleasure of working with some of the best and brightest wine minds in the city and sharing product made by truly passionate individuals.

To everyone who has ever walked through our doors, we thank you! As a small business, every bit of support is meaningful. And to those devout supporters of JWebb (you know who you are), we will miss seeing your faces light up our shop, the conversations we have had and the friendships that have developed.

There are so many memories to share and we will have more news to share as well as sale info in the coming days.

The wines from Chiorri have been a long time favourite in the shop and around the dinner table. Their Sangiovese is classic with cherry, hints of vine ripened tomato and black tea like tannins. The Grechetto, a varietal indigenous to Umbria, is deliciously vibrant with green apple, white peach and hints of flint and a faint minty undertone.

Ca’ di Rajo is an historic winery near the Piave River in Veneto, making natural wines from vineyards trained using the Bellussera method, unique to this part of the world.

The intricate geometric pattern of the vines was once used to combat powdery mildew. Today Ca’ di Rajo had the largest Bellussera (20 hectares) known, providing a look back at the ancient methods of wine production.

Their natural sparkling’Lemoss’ is done sur lie, made with 100% Glera 100% harvested by hand from the Bellussera vineyard and spontaneously fermented.

The yeasts, once fermetation is finished, remain on the bottom of the bottle, and this is where the Italian expression "col fondo" or the French "sur lie" comes from. This technique provides the wine with an incredible texture, much more so than your typical, featherlight Prosecco.
