We have extensive experience in commercial, residential, retail, hospitality and installation design.
Architecture Soup is a design tool we ( + .workshop) created to integrate a new development into an established while preserving character. We first made context maps and then created color-coded "architecture soup" pieces, sorting them into "character staples" and "character anomalies." Each team member selected from both character categories and applied them to our project. We quickly sketched our ideas, reviewed them as a team, and chose the most promising designs based on their ability to preserve and enhance neighborhood character. Our ultimate goal is to maintain the community's unique look and feel, shaped by its residents, the actual characters of the neighbourhood.
It was great chatting with Al on the mddl podcast about all things middle housing - hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did!

We have created a preservation design tool called ‘ Soup’, which we created to thoughtfully integrate a new development that we are and into an established . After carefully observing and mapping existing elements we were then able to identify common features, or "character staples," such as hip roofs and dormers, and rarer "character anomalies," such as intricate details and one-off window designs. This character cateloging helped inform our next step in the process of creating Architecture Soup...

A new design tool that we have created collaboratively with XYC Design + Development is live on our website. Architecture Soup is what we are calling it - get all the details from the link below!

This is an example of a typical in . There are a lot of opportunities to gently increase density in these communities in a contextually appropriate way. R-CG zoning allows us to weave small-scale, grade-oriented projects that increase housing supply into established where the infrastructure is already in place, amenities and commuting paths are close by, and the transit system is consistent and reliable. For these developments to be successful, they need to integrate into the existing character of their communities.

Last April we (XYC + BOLD) developed a Work Integrated Learning studio for the 's , focusing on a passion of ours that we’ve dedicated a large amount of our practice to: . In September, we were joined by four students in their final year of their Masters program to explore creative solutions to the housing crisis is now facing. They built a body of that supports alternative models, modes and methods of realizing housing solutions, not only through , but policy as well.
We built upon our students’ ideas as the basis for our ‘99 Problems’ , which we presented at the Open Concepts Design lecture series in February. We developed the students’ projects and wove in our own built and in-progress work to expand on and communicate the architectural concepts. We will be sharing these concepts, ideas, projects and work from the lecture until housing affordability has been addressed.
