As a young gay man coming of age in the 1980s, Daniel Rozak was deeply affected by the onset of the AIDS epidemic, and how the disease ravaged the 2LSGBTQ+ community. He lost friends to AIDS. He also lost straight friends who were afraid of getting AIDS from him because he was gay. The stigma was that strong.
Seeing the devastating effects the disease was having on those around him in the community, he decided to dedicate much of his life to supporting people suffering from HIV and AIDS.
Now, in his role at TD, Rozak is helping to guide the Bank's efforts to support the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and people living with HIV and AIDS, through he TD Ready Commitment â the Bank's global corporate citizenship platform.

In 1984, TD became the first major Canadian financial institution to open a branch in the heart of Torontoâs 2SLGBTQ+ community, becoming a physical manifestation of the Bankâs commitment to inclusion.
âThat branch in the heart of Church and Wellesley, it has played a very, very, very important part in my coming out journey,â said Al Ramsay, Vice President and Head of the 2SLGBTQ+ and Black Customer Segments at TD.

When the Afghan government collapsed in 2021, Sajad Naderi and his family settled in the Greater Toronto Area.
Naderi came to Canada with an MBA and seven years of experience working in banking in Afghanistan. Back home, he had a paid-off house and a car. But looking for a job in Canada was challenging, he says.
âI was so frustrated. I was so demotivated,â Naderi says. âEvery position I applied forâthey said I was overqualified. Or that I didnât have Canadian experience.â
Naderi was introduced to Jumpstart Refugee Talent, a charitable organization that helps refugees, refugee claimants and forcibly displaced individuals find work and start businesses.
Through Jumpstart, he got advice on the job search. He was also selected to attend the Jumpstart 2023 Toronto Hiring Event, where he interviewed with TD.
To mark World Refugee Day, Naderi and others shared their stories and thoughts on what newcomers to Canada need to access opportunities to thrive, grow businesses and feel a sense of belonging.

For Michelle David, there's no better teacher than lived experience.
David, a TD branch manager in Toronto, learned to solve everyday customer interactions over the past 15 years by experiencing them first-hand. Each one helped her build the soft skills, the institutional knowledge and confidence she needed to support her customers.
"The impactful way to learn how to solve a more complex interaction with a customer was to have one and use it as a learning moment," said David.
Now, David's colleagues can develop that same experience before they ever step foot in front of a customer. Through TD Invent, the Bank's approach to innovation, 20 TD branches in Canada and 11 stores in the U.S. are using virtual reality (VR) headsets to simulate customer interactions and learning how to solve them in a safe space.
With this VR program, TD colleagues are learning to build the expertise and confidence to assist customers in a branch setting. In each simulation, they're transported to a virtual TD branch where they're approached by virtual customers.
