ART is meant to move your soul; grab you in some way that challenges you, embraces memories, and/or energizes you.
Todays art-moment or story is on Phil Darrah.
Phil Darrah was born in the United Kingdom. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London (1961-1964).
He immigrated to Canada in 1968 and was a professor from that time on until 2003. He resides south-west of Edmonton.
“I work intuitively with changing thematic boundaries. The themes, for example “Beach Scenes”, or more recently “Palettes” often have quite prosaic origins but may come assume importance as they open pictorial territory. The stuff I work with is paint, opacity, translucency, surface, shape, scale change, placement and visual weight, etc.“
“Is this blob big enough and what about that open area?” Is the mundane conversation of making something.
Hopefully, something that transcends the ordinary and becomes sublime.” - Phil Darrah
Today's Short story is on Herbert Siebner:
Herbert Siebner was born in 1925 in Germany. He studied fine arts under Dr. Ernst Schumacher (1935-37), at the Schiller Real Gymnasium, Stettin (1937-41), under Professor Atelier Max Richter, Stettin (1941-43), and finally at the College of Art in Berlin (1946-49). He moved to Victoria in 1954 and lived there until his passing in 2003.
He has had numerous one man shows and group exhibitions throughout Germany, France, the United States and Canada. In 1954 he immigrated to Canada.
Herbert Siebner spent some time in Greece on Holidays and was quite fascinated by Greek mythology and the Dada movement. His teaching and influences were from the German expressionist movement but he drew on many different styles of art to create something of his own.
He was a member of the Limner Group of Victoria, the longest living group of artists in Canada. Many important Canadian artist were members, such as; Maxwell Bates (president), Myfanwy Pavelic, Elza Mayhew, Walter Dexter, Patricia Martin-Bates, amongst others.
“Thank you to my friends for letting me live the life of a Bohemian” - Herbert Siebner
With art, an artist is like an explorer and adventurer, they venture into a world unique to their own and share with the outside world their findings… They explore landscape, still life and inner worlds that move them with the intension to expand and hopefully share with you.
We are all influenced by our environment; be that political, physical or emotional… artist use visuals to relay something to the viewer that will illicit emotion. In this exhibition we bring to light varying focuses of artists looking to explore and chart their own way in their art.
Presenting works from artists: David Alexander, Nancy Boyd, Camrose Ducote, Harold Town, Hilda Oomen, Brent Laycock, David Newkirk, Robin Smith Peck amongst others.
Today's Short bio/story is on Diana Zasadny:
Diana Zasadny studied at, what now is known as, the Alberta University for the Arts. She lives and works in Lethbridge, her home town.
Focusing primarily on landscape, Diana blends the boundaries of impressionist interpretation and contemporary abstraction into a glimpse of that elusive realm of life between reality and imagination.
A meeting of heaven and earth, trees embody the groundedness and earthiness of terra firma with the ethereal embodiment of the spirit. Diana magically captures the essence of both, each tableau a tapestry of woven light and form - a coming together of the seen and unseen. Her forestry mosaics escape the territory of the visual and drift into the property of the auditory as her paintings have been described as needing to be seen and heard as the wind sways the trees and audibly rustles the leaves.
(written by Lison McCullough)
My paintings come from visual and emotional connections with places that I find beautiful. Visiting them helps me build an emotional connection into the painting as well as represent the integral beauty and balance found in the natural landscape. -Diana Zasadny
We recently received some new works by Laurie Steen of her "Hidden Landscapes" as well as some lovely smaller figurative works.
Laurie Steen grew up in the Priddis area and studied at the University of Calgary art, and later at the University of Manitoba for her interior Design degree. She had a passion for drawing and almost always used graphite in her works. Earlier in her career she became for know for her lovely gestural figurative works but always had a passion for landscape. While she lived in England she moved to doing landscape works exclusively. We have several of these lovely works as well!
Laurie Steen was elected a Royal West of England Academician in 2015, and her work in many collections including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. She has exhibited her work for over 25 years and continues to exhibit in Canada, and throughout the UK.
Galleries West Magazine's Diana Sherlock writes on Wendy Toogood's exhibition that is on now here . here is an excerpt from her story:
"Toogood’s art might not seem political, but it is, quietly so, in its processes and in the fact that it even exists. Joyful and political seem a paradoxical combination, but there is joy in the realization that through our daily activities and interactions with our communities we have the power to shape our worlds."
