During our recent trip to El Brasil, Nicaragua, we were pleased to see community members supported by our partners at the Centro SMART Nica making informed decisions about their water safety. Elona Rokines Ortaz shared with Taryn Meyers how her family decided to make the switch between filter types.

Our latest blog post explores how this collaborative approach is helping communities take control of their water, sanitation, and hygiene needs, ensuring they make the best choices for their health and well-being.

Even after a crisis, small steps in conservation can still create a lasting impact in a city. Last week, our senior manager of WASH technology, Suneel Rajavaram, joined RED-FM, a multilingual and multicultural radio station in Calgary, predominantly broadcasting in South Asian languages. Listen to the interview in Hindi:

In this chat, Suneel discussed the recent situation in Calgary. He explained that CAWST’s training and technical support on water conservation and stewardship across the globe can also be relevant in β€” for prevention as well as emergencies.

Suneel shared that CAWST was founded in Calgary, and is now a world leader in water, sanitation and hygiene training, consulting support and practical resources β€” serving South Asian countries like India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Calgary, Alberta, where CAWST is based, is under a state of local emergency. Water restrictions are in place as a result of a water main break that occurred earlier this month. As a result, we and our fellow Calgarians have gotten creative with decreasing our water use. It’s been inspiring to watch our local audience develop water conservation and sustainable water practices, especially when they’re using lessons learned from our global community.

This week, our Director of Global Services Meyers spoke with Global News TV on this very subject. Check out the news article and video featuring Taryn here: https://globalnews.ca/news/10574534/calgary-water-conservation-ideas/

CAWST is featured in the Globe and Mail’s supplement. This annual insert promotes the importance of giving to charities in Canada through the Association of Fundraising Professionals. It was an opportunity to share more on CAWST’s model and why donors, like Marcos Lopez, have decided to come alongside our organization.

We have a very ambitious goal – to reach 100 million people with better water, sanitation and hygiene by 2030. To make this goal a reality, we need the support of Canadian philanthropists to help catalyze action around the world. We know we can get there and are grateful for the support we have received to date. If this piques your interest, please read The Globe and Mail here and reach out to us. We’d love to connect with you.

On the evening of Wednesday, June 5, there was a critical water main break in Calgary, Alberta where CAWST is based. This past weekend, Calgary declared a state of local emergency and local residents and businesses are being asked to stop all outdoor water use, and to decrease indoor and non-essential water use by at least 25%. This has been a big story locally and across Canada, and demonstrates that water challenges can happen anywhere.

CAWST is in a unique position. It has been rewarding to share with Canadians what we’ve learned from our work with our partners around the world. As an organization based in Calgary that addresses global challenges related to water scarcity, conservation and sustainability on a daily basis, we provide a unique perspective. Water affects us all, and we all have a role to play.

Our Director of Global Services Meyers shared some of these learnings with CBC’s Alberta@Noon last week. Speaking on water conservation and the human right to water, she shared with listeners how they can make a difference right away. If you’re interested in learning more, please have a listen here: https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-1-alberta-at-noon/clip/16074205-water-conservation. Taryn comes in around the 20-minute mark.

In honour of on June 16, we’d like to recognize fathers like Abera.

Abera lives in a small rural village with his wife Aye. He is a proud father to three sons and three daughters. But like many in his community, they have faced tragedy due to unsafe water. Their children had no option but to drink from the nearby river, resulting in diarrhea, vomiting and other symptoms of water-borne illnesses.

Abera worked to find a solution and was connected with long-time training partner, Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church Development Commission (Ekhcdc Ethio). Through EKHCDC’s self-help groups program, Abera received the training and support he desperately needed to support his family with safe water. He learned about a range of topics from household water treatment and safe storage to basic hygiene and safe sanitation.

His powerful story is told in our Introduction to CAWST video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDnu_VTlTZs

Mark your calendars for May 28th: Menstrual Hygiene Day! Despite being a natural fact of life, for 1.8 billion persons of reproductive age, menstrual health and hygiene remains a taboo topic, and is a widely unmet need for millions. In a recent Q&A blog post, we sat down with Karen Joe, knowledge and research advisor at CAWST, to unpack some of the challenges around menstrual health management and discuss how infrastructure, attitudes and social norms shouldn't stand in the way of menstrual dignity.

When the world invests in menstrual health, it empowers individuals with education and resources for a more equitable world.
