Many years in the making, I’ve finally become a qualified NKT level 2 practitioner.
It’s been a great journey. I look forward to reaching level 3!
Every journey starts with one step.
My first step on this journey started in late December 2019. I came in after a friend’s recommendation with no experience for a one week trial. It was very challenging, and challenges are what drive me to get better. So, as of the first week of January 2020, I paid the full year and went to class twice per week until the school had to shut down in March 2020.
I did not return until June 2021 when the last of lockdowns ended. After returning, it only took a couple weeks to get back to the same experience level I left at.
For the first year and a half, I struggled with BJJ and personal issues. I was one of the few white belts since June 2021 that stayed in school and practiced, and the majority of students were blue belts and up. I didn’t see or feel my self progressing, and on more occasions than I want to share, I was ready to quit and never return.
That was how it felt until October 2022 when I entered my first tournament, the Paul McGrath tournament (RIP brother).
I didn’t think I did well in the tournament, yet, I ended up placing 2nd in my first tournament! This was surprising to me, as I felt no where near worthy of placing that high. Yet, after struggling for so long, there was finally something that made clear all the training and tough times were paying off. Since that tournament, a bridge was crossed and a switch flipped inside. No more did I want give up. It was 2-3 days per week of classes, 3-5 partners to roll with on open mat from now on.
The last year, I made leaps and bounds of improvements. There are too many people to tag that have had the patience and kindness to help me grow along the way, so I’ll summarize it by saying Thank You Everyone at , especially you, Josh Russell.
As of December 16th, 2023, I take a new challenge: levelling up to Blue belt in BJJ. I’ve dreamed of this day for almost 4 years, and now, it’s here.
I look forward to continuing the journey with all of you. Thank you again. 🙏🏼
Your coach has officially re-certified in the humble art of nutrition coaching.
Here’s to (at minimum) 2 more years of guiding you on a successful journey to achieving your optimal Deep Health!
Fitness isn’t meant to be a quick fix. It can take months, even years to achieve your goal(s). When we want to quit is when we must keep going. This is the building block to make fitness a lifestyle habit.
Depression is real.
I wish it was used exclusively as a term for moving your shoulder blades.
When depression hits, hit it harder with a meaningful training session.
Build your muscles. Love yourself.
But actually…
Did I miss something important?
Just putting it out there.
Stop whining outside the gym. Whine during your set.
You may feel like not going.
You may feel like going.
Regardless:
Go to the gym
Finish your workout and you’ll know why it was good to go.
The right people matter.
Having allies (friends, family, relatives, etc.) that support your journey into fitness is important. Any journey works out better when you have a team there to support you when you need it.
Having one or more trustworthy, valuable coach(es) is important to give you the direct guidance you need to get you where you want to go. Trust someone that challenges you to grow both physically and mentally, and that uses proven systems that have given their clients and themselves progressive results.
Achieving your goals simplified:
Start with the big picture. Begin to narrow your goals down to smaller steps. It’s no different than climbing a mountain. One small step at a time multiplied many times over gets you that much further.
Focus and direction are important. Keep someone or multiple people in your life that will be honest with you, keep you moving the way you need to go and prevent you from falling into the trap of distractions.
It’s not hard to achieve a big, 10 year goal, but it is necessary to put in the work and stay on course.
Step small, aim ahead, go big.
Here is the truth:
There is no easy way to get in great shape.
Show up, do what you have to do, leave, eat well, rest, recover, go back for more.
That’s the key to success. Nothing else.
Good times catching up with an old friend.
Always fun having a bro session with at
It’s important to have goals:
Short, medium, and long term.
It’s MORE important to commit to actions that help you get one step closer to those goals.
You may not hit your exact goals. That being said, taking proactive, specific actions greatly increases your chance of getting what you want.
Working on some back.

KISS rule:
Keep
It
Super
Simple
Do what you like, and do it a lot. Go at least 2x per week (preferably more), go every week, and keep doing it. Take progress pics every 2 weeks or month, and look back at the journey to see how far you’ve come.
Avoid taking on multiple disciplines you can only do once per week or every couple weeks. You will get better at them, but you will also experience heavy fatigue and lose motivation to reach mastery of said discipline.
Do you know anyone that has mastered a discipline that lacks high levels of fitness and additional lifestyle discipline?
Looking for someone that believes not.
Prioritize these fitness components for valuable long-term results.
Winning at fitness and health is more simple than it may seem.
Which of these components are you focused on?
I’m not saying you should NEVER go and enjoy yourself. What I’m saying is when you run into the temptation to change course from your new health habits, it can be tough to turn both people and a fun opportunity down.
If you are trying hard to stick to your new routine, whether it be diet, training, running, etc., or all the above, make excuses that that allow you to focus on your discipline and avoid getting sidetracked.
You got this. 💪🏼
Keep it super simple.
Train with intention.
Make every rep count towards your ultimate goal(s).
Mindset matters.
Often I hear this term “Work smarter, not harder.”
If you try to work too smart, you won’t work hard enough to get a desired outcome.
If you try to work too hard, you won’t look to gain advantageous knowledge about how your hard work can propel you forward.
Aim to be efficient and effective at anything you want to master. This will not only propel you forward: it will keep you focused while avoiding burnout.
You always have a choice.
Proceed to go take healthy, long-lasting action now, or:
Wait until you’re forced to take care of yourself, often with medicine/medical treatment.
How will you spend your time?
Who do you know needs to hear this?
Comment below.
One workout is not enough. 2 workouts a week will get you somewhere in a year. 3 or more workouts a week will get you more desirable results in 3 months and amazing results in one year.
What goals do you have?
What are you willing to do to reach your goals?

Keep it simple. Know when it’s time to push yourself a little harder, do it, maintain it, repeat.
In my experience, this method has worked every time with a client and myself. Patience and consistency are the keys to winning.

The gym-goers that are squatting 2.5x body weight for reps, jacked and shredded, and walking across the gym floor on their hands are often kind, approachable people.
Talk to them between their sets. They’re often good to give you a spot. You’ll likely make a new friend, too.
