All point of access: Check! The Mt. Pleasant house project has a large and private cedar deck that connects the living area and the kitchen. In the front, there is a concrete deck that ties into the rest of the pathways. And did we mention: This house has a legal basement suite that is also accessible from inside the house. Use it as a separate suite or simply use it as part of your main home.

Our Mount Pleasant house project is coming along nicely. Bespoke aluminum facade going up next week and we can’t wait to show you.

Our latest design-fabricate-build project, the Parkside Veil completing in August 2024. Situated in Mount Pleasant in inner city Calgary just around the corner from Confederation Park. This one has all the bells and whistles including an elevator for aging in place, and a legal secondary suite in the basement. We can’t wait to show you the finished home!

Meet our Business Analyst for Summer 2023. Noah Jina is a Software Engineering and Business Administration student at the Ivey Business School at Western University, currently going into his 4th year of the program. Noah's studies have focused on Finance, Business Management, and Software Development. His interest in designing cutting-edge software and working on strategies for technological adoption and advancement have made him an excellent fit at MASIV.

Meet our Future Design Leader for Summer 2023. Jaspal Ubhi is a Master of Architecture student at the University of Calgary, currently going into his first year (M1) of the program. With a bachelor's degree in Multidisciplinary Studies from the University of Calgary, focusing on Economics and Architecture, and prior graduation from SAIT's Architectural Technologies program, Jaspal Ubhi possesses a strong educational background. His interest in emerging digital tools and passion for creating inclusive and assertive spaces make him an excellent fit at MASIV.

Jaspal Ubhi is dedicated to advancing architecture through innovative design and fabrication skills. In addition to his professional pursuits, Jaspal Ubhi has personal research interests in invisible barriers.

Custom in-concrete LED lighting for our Capitol Hill project. This was an extremely difficult detail to resolve, with no off the shelf products available, and perfect coordination required with electrical, concrete, and fabrication. We created a custom solution that utilizes 12V LED strips and had to create a double sleeved waterproofing application. In the end we were very pleased with how it worked out. Looking forward to using this detail in other projects.

The backyard canopy structure of the Capitol Hill House project was an addition to the scope after the house had begun construction. The design was seamlessly accommodated into the architectural typology by integrating a screw pile system, structural steel, corten steel sheets, and integrated LED lighting all fabricated in house. The entire assembly was designed for assembly and was taken to site in pieces, and assembled in one day. The cedar deck and corten steel work well together and we managed to keep 2 of the existing trees on site.

Throwing it back to the curved parametric screen we detailed and fabricated for designed by . After MODA passed on the general form of the screen, we used Grasshopper to rationalize it for fabrication using rigid foam. The entire assembly was designed for assembly on site and we modeled it right down to the nuts and bolts. This gave us a precise model that was milled on our CNC, mocked up at our shop, and ultimately installed on site. This is still one of our favourite projects.

Our office uses a unique 3D and BIM to fabrication workflow powered by computation and collaboration.

Throwback to this white concrete fireplace wall and hearth we made for Holland Design. We templated the entire wall and created site specific patterns that were digitally fabricated, poured, sanded and dispatched. The entire precast wall and hearth were installed and fit up seamlessly. Happy International Women’s Day! We could not pass up this opportunity without acknowledging Karen Mercedes (yes, the Mercedes in our company name). Not only has she supported and grown our operations, but she has done all of this while being pregnant and raising 3 kids, being a superstar operations manager and technical lead, being the strongest and most resilient business owner through the bad times and good times, and never failing to make sure projects are successful for our clients. She has done all this while bootstrapping 2 businesses, never complaining and always remaining positive, and making sure she still spent quality time at home. If there is a title of Supermom Business Owner, she would be right up there. Thank you for all your dedication and hard work !

We fabricated the large raw black steel shelving unit, the white oak coffee tables, communal table, and lunchroom table, and also the yellow lacquered magazine shelf. Our shop is multi-material and we have never restricted ourselves to any one material. We focus on solving design problems instead and master any materials or tools required. Our approach is applied research in architectural materiality and fabrication. All of these experiences have translated to our scaled up workflow in residential design/fabricate/build.

In 2020, the Government of Canada put out a tender for acoustic phone booths for Open concept offices. 18 small and 3 large ADA units to be precise. We successfully procured the contract, designed and engineered the product, and completed fabrication and delivered the units to the Government offices in Ottawa and Gatineau. This project was the equivalent to extreme sports, and we didn’t even get a chance to photograph them properly. Regardless, these units were all made to be prefabricated, plug and play, complete with light sensors, and electrical connections. The wall assemblies were engineered to be acoustic noise cancelling and the unit came complete with a desk surface and height adjustable chair. It also had its own HVAC system. This was truly an exercise in technical design solutions, intersection of designXengineeringXarchitecture, but also resilience and perseverance. In case you are wondering, there was definitely some blood, sweat and tears behind the scenes. All of these experiences have contributed to our scaled up workflow in residential design/fabrication/build.

Announcing our next Single Family Residential Project in inner city Calgary in the coveted Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. Situated 2 blocks from Confederation park, this large single family home is packed with features, a secondary suite and plenty of site specific contextual fabrication. The design as well as the facade will be evolving as we move along but we are excited to break ground on this project as this post is being written. Watch out for progress images!

HAPPY NEW YEAR from the MASIV team to all our friends, clients, family, and loved ones! 2022 was quite the ride for us for transitioning from an architectural fabrication company to a Detailed Design, Fabrication and Build company. We finished our first residential construction project, and secured a few more. We can’t wait to show you what we have in store for 2023. Thank you for your continued support!

This project allowed Mercedes and Singh to execute a construction project through the lens of fabrication. Our unique design-fabricate-build process took the project from start to finish in house. Every single detail was considered right in the beginning at design stage, so the client knows exactly what to expect and how it will work, and there are no surprises on site. Our 3D modelling process includes everything for clash detection, right down to the nuts and bolts.
