Vedder River gravel removal will proceed, despite our objections.

Monday executive members Mark McDonald, Alli Deelstra, Jesse Zeman and BCWF Special Advisor Dr. Marvin Rosenau met with Minister Heyman and his staff regarding gravel removal on the Vedder River.

While there is consensus that removal of gravel in the lower and middle sections of the river is warranted to ensure public safety in technically and scientifically defensible locations, the BCWF is opposed to gravel removal in the upper section of the river where removal does not appear to be defensible and where it will have a major impact of fish habitat.

Gravel removal in the lower and middle sections of the river is warranted to reduce flood risk. The BCWF remains opposed to mining in the upper reaches of the river, which is vital rearing habitat for salmon. We continue to press the provincial government to abandon this phase of the operation.

Thank you to everyone who engaged on this issue. The Minister committed to review concerns raised by Dr. Rosenau.
