Having worked on a palliative care floor in my early twenties and now being a death doula, death is a comfortable topic for me. I have no problem talking about it.
My parents are still alive and we have discussed this topic quite often. Personally I believe it is very important to know a person’s wishes. I do realize however a lot of people don’t know their parents, partner’s or children’s wishes. Do you know if your loved one wants to be cremated or buried? Open casket or closed casket? These are only a couple of things which need to be decided. When a loved one has passed, you are dealing with so many emotions. It is so much easier if these things are discussed ahead of time.
As a death doula, we can help to discuss this and talk about the many options there are available to you.
