🌟TRANS FAMILY EDUCATION🌟: We are thrilled to announce that our family education support group, Learning and Loving Together, will be running twice a month from September to November 2022!

This group is ideal for folks who personally love/support a trans person and are looking for education on trans-related topics, especially those who are early on in their learning journey (though all are welcome)!

This group is a safe space for family, friends, and loved ones of individuals who are trans/non-binary/gender questioning. Topics will vary from understanding hormone therapy and its changes, navigating the coming out process, exploring feelings and reactions to our loved one’s gender journey and how to fully support them through their exploration. We will learn and connect through each other’s experiences in a non-judgmental and confidential setting. This group meets on Monday nights from 5 - 7 PM via Zoom.

This group is now being offered through CMHA HKPR’s H.O.P.E. Learning Centre. To register for groups, please visit our website. If you have questions or require assistance with registration, please reach out to TPO/HOPE worker Carl Cruise-Baxter at [email protected].

Had an interesting conversation with a client today.....

Her: I suppose every month is Pride Month at PathWays
Me: I guess you're right!
Her: I feel really lucky to be where I'm at in my life right now
Me: I couldn't be happier for you.
Her: I just wish ALL my trans sisters/brothers could feel like this. I never thought I'd get to this point; today I can't believe that I ever doubted my capacity to fully be myself, out in the word. It was a really crappy way to live.

And that folks, is why Pride Month is important. Even if we already celebrate it regularly 😉

This week is – a week to bring attention to issues that impact trans communities.

According to a 2018 report by the Human Rights Commission, only 19% of gender q***r and nonbinary youth, 14% of trans boys, and 12% of trans girls participate in sport.

We support the full participation of trans people in sport, including trans women and girls, in ways that affirm their gender identity. Everyone has a right to participate in sport that is safe and inclusive.

Transgender Awareness Week is a week when transgender people and their allies take action to bring attention to the community by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community.

The truth about plucking:

The sad truth is, it's probably our least favourite hair removal method (sorry guys & dolls!). And waxing is right up there with plucking in our opinion.

Plucking/Waxing can cause a couple of unhappy results:

1. distortion of the follicle under the skin (making our lives more difficult when it comes to permanent hair removal).

2. thickening/strengthening of the hair follicle: when a hair is pulled abruptly from its happy home, it can cause bleeding of the capillaries which fed the follicle root. This bleeding can act as a 'fertilizer' for the next hair preparing to grow from that particular hair root - essentially feeding & strengthening the next hair preparing to grow.

3. Quorum Sensing: refers to the ability of the follicles to sense a certain threshold of lost hair and then initiate a collective response. Plucking a high density of hairs within a small region prompts regrowth of all hairs in that area. When the plucking reaches a specific threshold, the “distressed” follicles secrete a chemical called CCL2, which recruits macrophages—a type of white blood cell—to the scene. The macrophages then release a signaling molecule known as TNF-a, which directs the hair follicles in the affected region to reactivate.

We can pretty much remove hair from anywhere on the body that we can access/reach.
Ears, breasts, toes, nose, navel, etc. None of it seems like strange requests to us.

Our boundaries as electrologists and laser technicians are defined by where the hair is located on the body - if it's inside the body, we simply can't get to it to treat it (for example: inner ear hair, or hair removal post SRS). If it's on the exterior of the body - or even a mucus membrane area we can access (for example: l***a) - we can remove the hair.

So, there are NO STRANGE QUESTIONS when it comes to "where can you remove hair?".
We've heard it all and generally, the answer is YES, WE CAN REMOVE HAIR THERE!

We get SOOOOO many questions about our LightSheer Diode laser. And we're not complaining...keep those questions coming!

At PathWays we're proud of the quality of the equipment, and the training, our staff receives.
When working with clients, we devise a personalized plan for hair removal based on your own goals and hair/skin type. Often, the first step is laser hair reduction. So, how do we ensure our clients get the best possible results.....?

Maximizing your results with Laser Hair Reduction:
1. Start With A Consultation
All treatment plans at PathWays start with a complimentary consultation. During the consultation, you will meet with a practitioner to review your medical history, discuss treatment goals, explain how the treatment works, talk about what type of results you can expect and determine if you will be an appropriate candidate for treatment. Consultations are quick, lasting anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.

2. Be Prepared
Practitioners will recommend you arrive for your laser hair removal appointment with treated areas freshly shaven. Don’t wax/pluck any of the treated areas prior to treatment. With waxing/plucking, hair is removed by the follicle. With laser hair removal, the hair follicle in the treated areas needs to be intact. The hair follicle is the pigment the laser needs for hair removal to be effective. If the hair follicle isn’t in place, the laser will burn the skin instead of removing hair.

3. Have Realistic Treatment Goals
Laser hair removal will permanently reduce body hair, but there’s no scientific proof that it can permanently remove ALL body hair. Clients should not expect to be 100% hairless with laser hair removal (this is where electrolysis comes in!). This is why the FDA refers to the results from laser hair removal as “permanent hair reduction”.

Most clients report a significant reduction in the amount of body hair that grows back after receiving a series of laser hair removal treatments. The hair that does grow back tends to be sparse, fine and lighter in color. With laser hair removal, you’re reducing the amount of shaving you’ll need to do in the future, while reducing the quantity and thickness of the hair that grows back. Once a client has finished a complete series of laser hair removal treatments, they’ll typically need a few maintenance sessions in the future.

4. Timing Is Everything
The ideal time of year to receive laser hair removal will be when the skin is least exposed to the sun. This tends to be in the fall for most clients, either two to four weeks after the skin has received any sort of sun exposure.

The ideal time of year for treatment will depend on many factors. First off, your lifestyle – do you spend a lot of time outdoors with your skin exposed? Secondly, it will depend on how tanned your skin is. The darker the skin is, the less energy the laser will be able to use for a safe and effective treatment. With the reduction of energy of the laser, more sessions will be required in order to obtain desired results.
It’s important to note that the farther the body area is away from the face and heart, the longer the healing time is and the longer the hair growth cycle takes.

5. Schedule Treatments Ahead Of Time
Depending on the area being treated and the stages of hair growth, it can take multiple laser hair removal sessions for the hair follicle to weaken enough so that it doesn’t grow back. To achieve desired results, we recommend our clients come in for treatment once every 6 to 10 weeks, depending on the area of the body that’s being treated.
It’s a good idea for you to book all of your laser hair removal sessions ahead of time and get them on their calendar at the beginning of your treatment plan. This not only guarantees you will get your desired appointment times, but also helps you stay on track with your treatments and reduces the chance of missing a session. If you wait too long in-between treatments and miss a laser hair removal session, you run the risk of falling out of the hair growth cycle and may find your results are minimized.

At PathWays we utilize a LightSheer Desire Diode laser (2020 model) - perfect for a full spectrum of skin and hair types.
If after a free consultation we find that you are NOT a candidate for laser hair reduction, don't fret. Remember, we're electrologists too!
