Hello!
My name is Chelsea Aitken and I am a First Aid Instructor for Equi-health Canada, I became an instructor simply because I don't believe there is an end to learning about horses! I have dreamed about horses since the day I saw my first one at a parade held in Alexandria, Ontario.
I started riding at the age of five and have never stopped.
I believe whole heartily that knowing first aid and what to do in an emergency with your horse is half the battle!
Since I was young every horse I met, every barn I attended i always learned something new, I strive for that.
I am a mom of a beautiful nine year old girl and I also work full time in lawncare and snow removal with Husky services/ Clip'n Trim, operating machines and I have been doing that for almost 6 years now. I do alot of side work aswell such as gardening, dog grooming and many other side jobs.
I guess you can say I am the jack of all trades, master of none 😅 I don't believe there is an end to learning and I want to exceed all of my learning experiences! I am a huge animal lover, even the smallest creepiest crawlers!
I look forward to getting to know everyone and joining such a wonderful community! 😊

Most of you by now have heard of the EHV-1 neurologic form outbreak in an equine facility in the Luskville, Quebec area. Below is some general information on the virus and some links for more information. As always, should you have questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact us via phone or e-mail.

WHAT IS EHV-1: A virus of the herpes family, which most often causes respiratory disease but can also cause neurologic symptoms, abortion and neonatal death

HOW IS IT TRANSMITTED/SPREAD: Direct horse-to-horse contact through respiratory secretions and indirectly through contaminated clothing or physical objects.

SYMPTOMS: Respiratory symptoms are most common – fever, nasal discharge, ocular discharge, minimal coughing, lymph node swelling under mandible.

Neurologic form – Rapidly progressive symptoms, minimal respiratory signs, fever, incoordination of hind limbs, loss of tail tone, lethargy, dribbling urine, leaning, recumbency

PREVENTION: BIOSECURITY! Isolate horses with fever, symptoms of respiratory disease or neurologic disease, wash hands and change clothes after handling suspicious horses, do not share tack or equipment, minimize or stop all travelling between barns (with or without a horse)

VACCINATION: There are vaccines to protect against the most common strains of EHV 1 however these do not protect against the neurologic form of the virus.
