In early spring, we were faced with a new challenge, more personal than usual: How could we thank our outgoing board of directors, a group of people who lent their wisdom and creativity to our organization?
Stodgy walnut plaques? Etched glass pieces? Executive pen sets? Commemorative clocks? No! Never! That’s not our style.
We chose instead to support an entrepreneurial sector that makes an important—albeit skimpily supported—contribution to the overall economy of Akwesasne, Cornwall, and SDG: the arts.
Shannon Lebrun, the current board president, is emphatic when she says that volunteer members of our Board of Directors are the heart of ACCFutures. “Their savvy when it comes to economic development is what truly differentiates us from other players who support SMEs. As an organization we wanted to recognize their significant contribution with a piece of artwork that represents this organization’s vision and the creative genius that exists here.”
Working closely with consulting artist Mandy Prevost, we commissioned a piece from Laura Steven of Victoria Street Studios. The Finch-based acrylics artist was tasked with embodying the entrepreneurial spirit of our region in a 24” x 36” framed piece.
“It feels good to play a part in saying thank you to the board members,” she said. “Plus, because I mostly do abstract representation of animals, it was exciting to be given creative license on such a broad theme.”
The result, which Laura named “Ignite”, was delivered to ACCFutures in April. It is an incredible interpretation of our organization’s commitment to identifying and igniting opportunities for entrepreneurs and their communities. It’s equally a celebration of growth and development, of inspiration and innovation.
The piece takes us on a journey through our region using an uplifting muralistic approach. Distinct themes flow into each other: coffee cups and paperwork to represent what fuels entrepreneurship, brick-and-mortar shops, a tractor pulling a wagon filled with the harvest, an artist painting a field of flowers, two snipes at the riverside looking towards Akwesasne, and finally, a prominent air balloon—a nod to entrepreneurs “taking off”.
The original piece will hang in our office while limited edition prints will be presented to Members at Large who completed the maximum term on ACCFutures’ Board of Directors.
Our hope is that these important community contributors will proudly hang “Ignite” on their walls and see it as a fitting tribute to their stewardship and service to ACCFutures and the people it serves.

Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre's Starter Company Plus program is accepting applications for its spring session!

This 10-week course helps entrepreneurs Start, Grow or Purchase a business. Starter Company Plus uses a mix of webinars, skills development and mentoring from local business leaders to help you succeed. During the 10 weeks, you'll develop business skills and knowledge to ensure you have the necessary tools to create and sustain a successful business.

Upon Completing Starter Company Plus, applicants may receive a $4500 grant. Applicants will also become eligible to receive up to $7500 for the ACCStarter Micro Loan (upon approved credit).

Lost Villages Candle Co. got its name from the historic past this part of Ontario holds. The logo and most my labels depict my home, it was the first home in Long Sault, relocated from Maple Grove.

I make hand poured soy candles, wax-melts and tea-lights. All my products are different than traditional candles in that they burn clean, even, they last longer, and they are virtually smoke-free.
I combine nostalgic and elegant containers using soy wax, premium fragrance oils and natural cotton and/or wood wicks.
