The Capitol 🎥 (Historic Cornwall)

This landmark was located on the north side of Second St W. downtown near-to the current-day provincial courthouse.

The Capitol Theatre opened January 1928 and had a large seating capacity of 1,360. It was very opulent and artistic for the time.

It featured blockbuster movies such as “The Taming of the Shrew” starring Canada’s own Mary Pickford and American Douglas Fairbanks.

Closed in 1985 it was demolished by the city administration in 1991.

Cornwall has commemorated this famous building in a mural and a plaque featured outside 228 Pitt St.....the sight of my current commercial space FOR LEASE. 😉

(The name of the Capitol is misspelled on the mural.)

The dreaded no-corrode sewer laterals

The sewer line that carries wastewater from the sanitary fixtures and floor drains inside your home to the city’s main sewer line is called a sewer lateral. The property owner is responsible for maintaining the sewer lateral to the point where it connects with the city`s main sewer line at the street. These pipes are typically made from PVC and older materials such as cast iron, clay, transite and the dreaded no-corrode pipe.

No-corrode was made locally from Domtar paper and tar rolled into a thick tube. While it didn't corrode, after several decades it often blisters and collapses. The only way to remove it is to dig up the basement floor, dig up the front yard and install new pipe inside and out.
