Try these animal walks with your child! You can do these different animal walks before activities to help your child get ready to focus and learn.
This can be helpful if your child has ‘difficulty’ sitting still or if they need a mental and physical break between challenging activities. Also, this is just a fun activity to integrate some physical movement in your day, as we’re all stuck at home a bit more than we would like!
Or you can pretend and role-play as these different animals for some fun pretend play with your kiddo!

.speech has some SIMPLE ideas for how to create natural opportunities for your child to practice using their words. These small changes to your environment helps to give your child a reason and motivation to communicate. It can be as simple as putting a toy or a favorite snack on a higher shelf so that your child has a reason to ask for help or tell you what they want. These are easy ideas to add onto what you are already doing!

« Give your child a CHANCE »
As a parent, you’re probably VERY good at anticipating your child’s needs! Most engaged and involved parents are impressively good at this, and it’s wonderful...
But sometimes this reduces the need for your child to use words to communicate!
Often, we need to intentionally create opportunities for our children to need to talk to us by making things just a little harder for them.
Even when we know what they want, give them the chance to ask for it. Let them learn that words get them things faster and more reliably than what they’re doing now.
Have you ever tried this?! Something else? Let me know what opportunities get your little one motivated to talk!
A fantastic idea from .yeg.slp! Kids LOVE water play and can spend hours pouring, squeezing and splashing. This is a great idea to add something different into their play, so that you can model new vocabulary! Rachelle has thought of some great verbs you can target with this activity. I also pair this activity with some picture visuals for some of my kiddos who have difficulties communicating verbally.

One of my favourite sensory play activities the past few weeks has been freezing little toys or gems in ice cubes (or use larger Tupperware to create ice blocks). This activity is so engaging as little learners are motivated to melt the ice and find what’s inside. Use the activity to target verbs such as pour, scoop, squeeze, melt, etc. and talk about what is happening.
