Throughout her academic career, Tasha Hubbard studies the relationship between the buffalo and Great Plains Indigenous people. Now an accomplished filmmaker, the U of A Native Studies professor releases a new film on the subject: Singing Back the Buffalo.
Produced with Blackfoot Elder Leroy Little Bear of the University of Lethbridge, the film captures a growing movement to repair the lost connection between the buffalo and Indigenous people — a bond that existed for millennia before it was severed by colonialism and decimated buffalo populations.
Singing Back the Buffalo will appear at Metro Cinema in Edmonton on Sept.18. An edited version of the film will be broadcast on CBC’s The Nature of Things sometime in early 2025, one of the first Indigenous-directed episodes to air on the program.

We may be Green + Gold here at the University of Alberta, but on September 29th and October 1st, we encourage everyone to wear orange in honour of Indian Residential School survivors and for all those who did not make it home to their families and communities.
We encourage your support in purchasing an orange shirt, whether for you, your family, or your friends, in whatever capacity you can give at this time. All proceeds from the orange shirts at the U of A bookstore will go to First Peoples' House, helping to fund cultural programming that keeps traditions alive and offers students a space to connect with their roots while they pursue their academic goals.
You can purchase a shirt or hoodie from the U of A Bookstore. https://lnkd.in/gmmMFJst
