New Art Incoming! This time it's a book. Liam Kavanagh-Bradette will be celebrating the launch of his book on June 9 - Sunday afternoon from 1-4 nibbles by We will have his book: Arctic Sealift available for purchase at Otto and Liam will be displaying his photographs for the month of June.
"Liam Kavanagh-Bradette is a documentary photographer living in Edmonton, Alberta. Examining the intersection between Canada’s economic and environmental impacts on the land and its people. His work examines many of the real world implications of the theories and concepts he studied at York University. Liam then studied Photojournalism at Loyalist College and worked briefly for local and national papers in Ontario and Alberta before deciding to focus on long-term self-directed projects in order to bring attention to issues ignored or overlooked.
In 2018 he joined the crew of the M.V. Umiavut, a cargo ship in a fleet owned by NEAS, a Quebecois-Inuit company, which during the summer months transports everything from vehicles and building materials, to diapers condensed milk, fuel and other essentials to isolated communities in Canada’s far north. These communities were largely established by the Canadian government as an attempt to establish its claims of a sovereign Canadian arctic. And, as such they are heavily reliant on the annual shipments of goods north. Following the sea lift north I had the opportunity to document the life of the crew who operate the ships that make these isolated and permanent communities viable.
This book represents a chapter in a larger ongoing project exploring the dramatic and damaging impact that a warming arctic has on the people who live there, their culture and environment. It also looks at the impact of the of people who participate the global economy, as it expands north, seeking new markets and resources to exploit."
