We are proud to share that Dr. Andrea Haqq, distinguished pediatric endocrinologist, and professor in the Department of Pediatrics, has been honored with the 2024 Alvin B Hayles Visiting Professorship from the Mayo Clinic !
Dr. Haqq reflects on her experience:
"My recent visit to the Mayo Clinic has fostered numerous productive collaborations with esteemed researchers, including Dr. Seema Kumar, Division Lead for Pediatric Endocrinology. We have already scheduled several virtual meetings to explore international collaborations in childhood obesity, genetic factors related to obesity, diabetes, metabolism, and adolescent bariatric surgeryโa key area of expertise at Mayo Clinic, which is not available in Alberta.

Insulin Icodec, marketed as Awiqli, is now available in Canadaโthe first country globally to offer this innovative treatment. This advancement, led by Dr. Peter Senior at the University of Alberta, promises fewer injections for Type 2 diabetes patients.
Awiqli is engineered to slowly release insulin over a week, potentially reducing the need for daily injections. Although it's mainly beneficial for Type 2 diabetes patients, it's a significant step forward in diabetes care.
Nearly 12 million Canadians have diabetes or prediabetes. Dr. Senior emphasizes the impact: "365 shots a year versus 52โquite a big difference."

Novo Nordisk has announced that people with diabetes in Canada will soon have access to a new insulin option, allowing for once-a-week injections instead of daily doses.
The new insulin, icodec, will be marketed under the brand name Awiqli and will be available nationwide starting June 30.
This is the first basal insulin injection designed for weekly use, and Canada is the first country to offer this product. Health Canada approved Awiqli in March for treating adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

While genetics may influence your risk of developing diabetes, itโs not the only factor. The most common forms of are: and
Type 1 is an autoimmune disease. Individuals with type 1 diabetes aren't able to produce their own insulin (and can't regulate their blood sugar) because their body is attacking the pancreas. Roughly 10% of people living with diabetes have type 1, insulin-dependent diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes generally develops in childhood or adolescence, but can also develop in adulthood. People with type 1 need to inject insulin or use an insulin pump to ensure their bodies have the right amount of insulin. It is NOT related to body weight or eating sugary foods .
On the other hand, Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes can't properly use the insulin made by their bodies, or their bodies aren't able to produce enough insulin. Roughly 90% of people living with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is most commonly developed in adulthood, although it can also occur in childhood. Type 2 diabetes can sometimes be managed with healthy eating and regular exercise alone, but may also require medications or insulin therapy.
